What grout colours are available?
ProJoint Titan is available in three colours: Neutral (buff), Mid Grey and Basalt.
Please note that sand is a natural product and some minimal colour variances may occur.
What types of stone can ProJoint Titan be used with?
You can use ProJoint Titan epoxy grout with a variety of natural and manmade stone types, including:
- Sandstone
- Limestone (not darker limestone)
- Travertine
- Granite
- Basalt
- Slate
- Marble
- Quartzite
- Concrete and manmade paving slabs
Note: ProJoint Titan is not suitable for use with porcelain and some darker limestone. Use either ProJoint Rapidflow or ProJoint Porcelain instead.
Can I use ProJoint Titan with porcelain?
No. ProJoint Titan is not suitable for use with porcelain tiles because of the slight resin sheen that it leaves behind.
On natural stone, this slight sheen looks great as it enhances the natural hues and colours within the stone.
However, due to the density and impermeable nature of porcelain, this sheen can leave behind uneven patches. Instead, use ProJoint RapidFlow or ProJoint Porcelain, which are both for porcelain slabs and tiles.
Is ProJoint Titan permeable?
Yes, ProJoint Titan is permeable and allows water to drain through the joints. This helps to prevent water build-up on your paving.
For a fully permeable project, you must use a permeable bedding mortar such as Perma-Bed.
ProJoint Titan epoxy grout can also be used with impermeable bedding mortars such as Eco-Bed.
What are the minimum joint sizes for ProJoint Titan?
Joint sizes must be a minimum of 5mm wide and 20mm deep.
Can I pressure wash after applying ProJoint Titan?
Yes, but only after the joints have fully cured.
When pressure-washing, use a fan nozzle. Keep the nozzle itself at a safe distance so you avoid damaging the joints.
How many tubs do I need?
A single 22.5kg tub of ProJoint Titan covers a paved area of approximately 8–10m2.
How much coverage you achieve out of each tub depends on the size of the joints and paving slabs.
As a guide, this table outlines the approximate coverage of one tub of ProJoint Titan for varying joint and slab sizes. Get in touch if you need any further advice.
Joint size | 600mm x 900mm slabs | 200mm x 100mm slabs |
---|---|---|
5mm x 25mm | 52m2 | 8.4m2 |
10mm x 22mm | 26m2 | 4.2m2 |
15mm x 22mm | 15.5m2 | 2.8m2 |
Before use
Do I need to pre-seal the paving slabs?
It’s not always necessary to pre-seal pavers when using ProJoint Titan epoxy grout. However, with porous stones or textured surfaces, pre-sealing is highly recommended.
When to pre-seal
Porous natural stone – sandstone, limestone, and some granites may absorb resin, causing staining.
Textured or riven surfaces – they can trap excess grout, making cleaning difficult.
Lightly coloured or polished stones – pre-sealing will prevent potential discolouration from resin residues.
When pre-sealing may not be needed
Non-porous or dense stones – some granites, basalts and quartzites are less likely to absorb resin.
Smooth, non-absorbent concrete slabs – these pavers usually clean easily without sealing.
If you’re in doubt, apply the grout to a small test area first.
Regardless of the type of stone you’re using, and if you’re new to laying paving, you may still want to use a pre-grout sealant such as ProJoint Pre-Grout Stone & Porcelain Sealer that washes away quickly after applying.
How do I prepare the area for grouting?
Before applying ProJoint Titan, you must ensure that:
- Paving is firmly bedded and stable, and laid on bedding mortar suitable for the weight you expect to use the area for (up to a maximum of 10 tonnes). We also recommend using a quality paving primer.
- The bedding mortar is appropriate for the area’s intended drainage (either permeable or non-permeable mortars can be used with ProJoint Titan).
- Any soil or dirt is removed from the paving surfaces and joints – take care not to walk any dirt onto the area during application to avoid it getting trapped into the resin.
- If a pre-grout sealer is required, this has been applied. A sealant is recommended for porous and textured surfaces – see the advice above for more details.
How can I stop the resin sheen from forming?
While the slight resin sheen from ProJoint Titan can highlight the natural colours and hues of the stone, you may prefer to limit the amount of sheen that forms.
There are a few ways you can do:
- Before grouting apply a sealant, such as ProJoint Pre-Grout Sealant, to create a barrier and prevent the epoxy penetrating the paving surface. This particular pre-grout sealant washes away after application.
- Surfaces must be adequately prepped and soaked with clean water before applying the grout.
- When removing excess grout, use a wet medium/soft brush or squeegee at a 45º angle to the joints. Ensure no sand is left on the paving surfaces.
- It’s best to only apply the grout when the temperature is between 5°C and 20°C, and always keep the slabs misted with water. The optimum temperature is 15–20ºC. If the stone surfaces are too warm, particularly on darker slabs, the grout will cure much faster and create a challenge for keeping the surfaces wet.
- Never apply the grout if the temperature is above 20°C – the surface temperature could be up to 40°C, causing the grout to set too quickly on the slabs and making it difficult to remove.
- Avoid applying during colder weather. Cold temperatures increase the curing time, which increases exposure to moisture and can contribute to amine blush (hazy residue).
What's the ideal temperature for applying ProJoint Titan?
ProJoint Titan can be applied at temperatures from 3ºC and rising, and up to 25ºC. However, for the best results, warmer temperatures of 15ºC and above are ideal – but at a maximum of 20ºC.
As a rule of thumb, avoid applying the epoxy grout during very cold or frosty conditions. Cold weather affects curing times and can increase the risks of water damage and amine blush (hazy residue).
Can I apply ProJoint Titan in the rain?
Prolonged and heavy rain will delay the curing process and can risk spoiling the formula if it has not fully cured.
It’s best to delay applying the grout for a clear day. If there is a chance of rain, cover the area to protect the grout from potential rain damage.
How to apply ProJoint Titan
What tools or equipment do I need?
When applying ProJoint Titan, you will need:
- Hosepipe and access to clean water
- Paddle mixer
- Rubber squeegee (long handled)
- A wet medium-soft brush (long handled)
- Finishing bar or trowel (optional)
How do I apply ProJoint Titan?
Once the area is prepared and ready for grouting, here’s how to apply ProJoint Titan:
- Before you open the tub, liberally wet the paved area to fully soak the paving.
- Open the tub, remove the bottle of hardener and empty it into the resin/sand mix.
- Using a paddle mixer, combine the contents for 3 minutes or until the mixture becomes a free-flowing slurry.
- Ensure the pavers are still wet – if not spray the area again. Care should be taken to make sure the pavers do not dry out, especially during warmer weather.
- Empty the mixture directly onto the paving.
- Move the mixture to fill the joints using a rubber squeegee. Any empty joints must be completely filled.
- Leave for 5–15 minutes, allowing the foaming slurry time to disappear.
- Now, using a wet medium-soft brush at a 45º angle, sweep away the excess sand leaving the paving surfaces clean. Do this a number of times before the product cures to ensure no residue remains on the surfaces. Do not add any additional water at this time.
- Once the grout has begun to cure, you can use a finishing bar or trowel to ‘strike off’ the joints for a traditional finish (no further compaction of the joints is needed).
Always read the full instructions provided with the tub before application.
How long does the epoxy grout take to cure?
It really depends on the outdoor temperature and humidity at the time.
When the temperature is 20ºC, the area can handle foot traffic after 12 hours and light vehicle traffic after 24 hours. After the initial cure, joints will feel semi-hard, and they’ll continue to cure over the coming days.
Cold temperatures and moisture will extend the curing time. You must allow longer during these conditions.
Why is the surface of my paving tacky?
If after applying ProJoint Titan you can see tacky patches on the pavers, it’s likely that not all of the excess resin was cleaned away.
Use a damp sponge or clean cloth during the clean-up to remove any leftover resin.
Otherwise, get in touch and we can recommend a grout haze remover such as one from the Lithofin range.
Storage instructions
What is the shelf life of ProJoint Titan?
ProJoint Titaln should be used within 12 months from the date of manufacture. When storing unopened tubs that must be protected from frost, cold and drafts.
Please note: using this product after its expiry may increase the risk of an allergic reaction.
Can any leftovers be stored and reused?
