Top Tips for Planning Your Low Maintenance Garden

Pavestone Paving

The first step to creating a beautiful, low maintenance, paved garden is choosing the right paving. Ideally you want something that needs minimal cleaning and maintenance, that will look as good as the day it was bought for years to come.

For modern designs that have a clean finish, choose Porcelain paving as these provide a smooth, contemporary style that won’t fade with age and are perfect for garden gatherings.

Those looking for something more rustic, natural slate and granite stone paving will certainly tick boxes when it comes to making the right choice. Laying down cobbles also goes amazingly well with older houses and can add an element of archetypal majesty to any outdoor space. Similarly, concrete slabsare a cheaper option that would not look out of place as the paving of a medieval castle.

Natural Slate Paving

The latest advancement in durable paving solutions is Pavestone’s porcelain paving which is resistant to frost and algae, has minimal colour fading, and is non-slip. It comes in a variety of shades that are all incredibly realistic in their texture, colour and overall appearance.

Wood effect porcelain offers a more modern look, whilst natural stone types add a classic feel to your garden that looks just like the real thing. A fine example would be to use Cinder crosswood porcelain in the image below.

Next choose your favourite plants as patios make the perfect home for containers, and you can make some truly stunning displays with a variety of pots in different sizes. Make sure to re-plant your favourite plants into containers, hanging baskets and window boxes to surround your new patio with the all the lovely vibrant colour and fragrance that plants provide.

You can also choose to edge the sides of your patios with your beds and borders, giving you plenty of additional gardening space.

Alternatively, if you have a slightly larger space, why not create an attractive focal point with a circle feature or stone walling to create raised beds? These are perfect for the low maintenance gardener, because you can still have the variety and quantity of plants you like, just without any added back strain.

Also small-element paving tiles are back in fashion and the Pavestone Mosaic range represents an affordable alternative. This paving comes with a number of different patterned slabs to facilitate more design options. Use them to add a decorative feature to a large paved area, for fine detailing to brighten up a dark corner or to create a paved area in a small town house. The rustic and warm coffee colours of Arabica conjure up a delightful and idyllic countryside atmosphere. Contemporary elegance. A reproduction of the Victorian tiles, the cooler colours of Mosaic Victoriana are equally suited in modern, spacious, contemporary outdoor gardens or interior properties as seen below.

If you love to grow your own fresh produce, there’s no reason why you can’t as many types of fruit and vegetable can be grown in containers, even fruit trees. Strawberries are perfect for hanging baskets and root vegetables and leafy greens do extremely well in raised beds.

Be sure to break up your paving with some interesting features such as vertical planting, outdoor furniture and garden ornaments. The bubble and trickle of a water feature can help to bring your patio garden to life and can be built into the patio itself.

A pergola adorned with climbers will bring you shade if your space gets a lot of sun, or shelter if you are overlooked. Alternatively, you could consider a sail style canopy for a modern twist that will save on ground space.

Don’t forget to add your own personal touch – for example if you love to look after the birds in your garden, then make sure you reserve a little space for a feeder and perhaps a bath or nesting box.

Before you know it, your patio garden will have come to life with all the plants and wildlife you so cherish.
