How to Use the Big Spin Hurricane 5mm Starter Kit
- Begin by spreading your tile adhesive over the surface in the usual way.
- Slide the threaded spacer base underneath the edge of the tile until it sits flush against the tile face.
- Use 4 bases per standard square tile (one at each corner); use 6 for larger-format tiles or planks.
- Lay the adjacent tile into position.
- Place the cap onto the threaded base and spin it down until both tile surfaces are brought into alignment and flush with each other.
- Continue across the installation. The system holds tiles in place while the adhesive cures overnight, eliminating slumping, sinkage and lippage.
- Once the adhesive has fully cured, remove the bases by kicking them off with your foot or using a rubber mallet in the direction of the grout joint.
- Unscrew the caps, clean off any adhesive residue, and store them in the tub for the next job.
Clean any excess adhesive from the base and cap before it cures to make removal easier.

What's included in the Big Spin Hurricane 5mm Starter Kit?
50 reusable caps and 150 x 5mm spacer bases — 200 pieces in total, supplied in a plastic carry tub. The caps are the reusable component; the bases are the consumable. Once you've used through your bases, top up with the 250-base 5mm tub and reuse the caps from this kit.
What tile thickness is the 5mm Starter Kit designed for?
The Deep range — including this kit — is designed for tiles from 15–25mm thick. That covers 20mm outdoor porcelain paving, large-format marble and thick natural stone. For indoor tiles up to 15mm, you'd want the 2mm Standard Starter Kit instead.
Is the 5mm Starter Kit suitable for 20mm outdoor porcelain paving?
Yes — this is one of its most common uses. 20mm porcelain is in the 15–25mm Deep range, and 5mm is a popular joint choice for outdoor paving where a slightly wider joint suits the scale of the slab. If you're unsure between 4mm and 5mm, give us a call and we'll help you choose.
Are the caps reusable?
Yes — genuinely. The caps are the part you keep. After the adhesive cures, kick off the bases, unscrew the caps, clean them off, and store them in the tub for the next job. Only the bases need replacing between installations. The 100-cap tub (BSHC177) is available separately if you ever need to add to your cap supply.
Can I use the caps from this kit with separate 5mm bases?
Absolutely. The caps are interchangeable across the full Big Spin Hurricane range — Standard and Deep. Once your 150 starter bases are used up, just top up with the 250-base 5mm tub and keep going with the same caps.
Do I need any specialist tools?
No. The cap screws down onto the threaded base by hand — just spin it until the adjacent tile surfaces are flush. No pliers, no wedge tensioner, no additional tools beyond your standard installation kit.
How many bases do I need per tile?
As a guide, use 4 bases per standard square tile — one at each corner. For larger-format or plank tiles, use 6 to ensure full support and alignment across the tile face.
What's the difference between the Starter Kit and buying bases and caps separately?
The Starter Kit is the most convenient way to get started with the Big Spin Hurricane system — everything you need in one tub, in the right ratio to get a job underway. Once you're familiar with the system, buying bases and caps separately is more economical, since the caps are reusable and you only ever need to replenish the bases.
Can I use Big Spin Hurricane on walls as well as floors?
Yes. The system is suitable for compatible wall and floor tile installations across both the Standard and Deep ranges.
What causes tile lippage and how does a levelling system prevent it?
Lippage is when the edge of one tile sits higher or lower than the adjacent tile, creating an uneven, stepped surface. On large-format tiles and 20mm outdoor porcelain in particular, even a small height difference is clearly visible across a wide surface. A levelling system prevents this by mechanically holding adjacent tile edges in the same plane while the adhesive cures.

Our delivery charges are calculated based on the size and weight of your order. When you add items to your basket, the delivery charges are displayed. Small orders are distributed via courier; larger orders via Pallet Network. Collection is available from our Tamworth depot by request (contact us first to arrange on 0330 122 1025).
Please note, there is a slight surcharge for areas that are outside of our locality, charges calculated at checkout.
