Ultrascape Prembed Mortar – Fibre Modified Bedding Mortar
Ultrascape Prembed Mortar is a fibre modified cement binder which, when mixed with sharp sand and water, can produce a rapid drying, high strength, mortar for bedding porcelain & natural stone tiles.
Prembed Mortar is ideal for both internal and external use, and can be used to form falls on patios, pathways and driveways. Ideal for depths from 30-100mm’s, it sets and can take light foot traffic after 12 hours. Prembed is easy to use, simply mix with sharp sand and water. When using Prembed on driveways and trafficked areas, we recommend a 4:1 mix ratio due to loading, for use on domestic patios and paved areas, a 6:1 ratio is sufficient.

Ultrascape Prembed Mortar Application
To correctly prepare substrates for receiving Ultrascape Prembed mortar, external paving should be a sub-base of 100mm of type one compacted stone. This is made up of one 50mm layer of compacted stone, followed by a second 50mm layer, giving a compacted depth of 100mm. Once this has been achieved, a minimum thickness of 30mm bed of Ultrascape Prembed mortar and aggregate can be applied. For driveways and heavy trafficked areas we recommend a minimum bed depth of 60mm. Once bedding mortar has been laid, the reverse side of the porcelain or stone will require a coat of Ultrascape Pro-Prime slurry primer, this should then be positioned on to the bedding mortar ensuring wet on wet contact. For use with driveways and trafficked areas, we recommend a 4:1 ratio due to loading, for use on domestic patios, a 6:1 ratio is sufficient.
How to Mix & Apply Ultrascape Prembed Mortar
Ultrascape Prembed mortar, aggregates and water can be mixed using mechanical mixers such as, a concrete pan mixer, a forced action mixer, a screw mixer or a pressurised screed pump. Where it is not possible to use a mechanical mixer and mixing by hand is required, it is recommended to thoroughly dry mix the Ultrascape Prembed mortar with the sharp sand. Then adding water in small increments whilst mixing until a “damp earth” mix is achieved, typically 5 minutes. The mortar should hold together firmly when formed into a ball.
Recommended Mix Ratio for Ultrascape Prembed Mortar is:
Ultrascape Prembed Mortar (Domestic Patios)
- 6:1 aggregate:
- Ultrascape prembed mortar binder 285 kg/m³
- 0/8 mm Aggregate 1 715 kg/m³
- Water 100 kg/m³
Ultrascape Prembed Mortar (Driveways and trafficked areas)
- 4:1 aggregate:
- Ultrascape prembed mortar binder 400 kg/m³ 0/8 mm
- Aggregate 1600 kg/m³
- Water 100 kg/m³
Note: Water addition may vary depending on moisture content of the aggregate being used.
How long do I have to use mixed Ultrascape Prembed Mortar
Approximately 45 – 60 minutes depending on temperature.
Ultrascape Prembed Mortar Precautions
Substrates need to be structurally sound, strong, smooth and level. It is essential that the floor to be paved has sufficient inherent strength to hold the proposed paving slab or tile and the mortar being used.
- The following chart lists maximum national standard loadings for a variety of floor substrates:
- Do NOT mix Ultrascape Prembed mortar with other cements or binders
- Do NOT dry mix with aggregate and leave
- Do NOT overwater Ultrascape Prembed mortar
- Do NOT add water or re-agitate the mortar once setting has started
- Do NOT use fine sand – only use sharp sand/aggregate grading as in BS EN 13139 (0/8)
- USE the Ultrascape Prembed mortar as soon as it is mixed
