Checking Soil Moisture Before You Start
Before mixing, check the moisture content of your spoil:
- Take a handful of material and squeeze it into a ball. If it holds together, there is sufficient moisture present — soil is classed as normal and Perma-Soil can be used as standard.
- If the ball fails to hold together, add a small amount of water until the material can be classed as normal.
- If the ball exudes moisture when squeezed, the soil should be classified as wet — use the higher dosage rate.
Dosage Rates
Determine material suitability per Appendix A9 of the SROH (Class B, C or D SMF material).
- 25kg bag or bucket: Use 1–2 buckets (25–50kg) of Perma-Soil per cubic metre of spoil. When soil is saturated, use 2 buckets. Never use less than 25kg per cubic metre.
- 12.5kg bucket: Use 2–4 buckets (25–50kg) of Perma-Soil per cubic metre of spoil. When soil is saturated, use 4 buckets. Never use less than 25kg (2 buckets) per cubic metre.
Mixing & Application
- Place spoil on a mixing sheet or board next to the repair site.
- Add Perma-Soil to the spoil as it is excavated or while the repair is being made, and mix thoroughly.
- Prior to backfilling, sprinkle a small amount of Perma-Soil onto the walls of the excavation.
- Compact the stabilised material back into the excavation in 150mm layers, as per Specification for Highways Works Series 800, Section 802 (5–9).
- For a stronger surface cap (e.g. where heavy traffic is expected), add additional stabiliser to the last lift.
- The backfill soil stabiliser should be compacted 60mm below the surface in footpaths and 100mm from the surface in Type 3 & 4 carriageways.
Clegg Hammer Test
A Clegg Hammer Test is recommended once compaction is complete. Required values: 18 IV for a footway, 21 IV for a carriageway.
Drop the Clegg Hammer on the desired area 5 times. The 4th reading is the critical value. If the 5th reading is within +1 or −2 units of the 4th reading, the compaction is acceptable.
Surface Reinstatement
Complete the reinstatement with the surface material. Spray vertical edges of the reinstatement, apparatus and compacted sub-base with UltraCrete SCJ Seal & Tack Coat before applying Instant Road Repair.
- 6mm IRR: Apply to approx. 45mm depth, compact to 30mm, then repeat to achieve 60mm total.
- 10mm IRR: Apply to approx. 45mm, compact to 30mm; repeat; then apply a final 60mm layer and compact to 40mm for the surface course.
Precautions
- Perma-Soil will stain — wear suitable protective clothing and eye/face protection.
- Avoid skin and eye contact.
- Do not exceed the recommended dosage — high Perma-Soil concentrations can raise pH, which may cause corrosion or adversely affect the life of buried services.

How much Perma-Soil do I need for wet soil?
Use the higher dosage where the soil is saturated. For a 12.5kg bucket, use 4 buckets (50kg) per cubic metre for saturated soil. For a 25kg bucket, use 2 buckets (50kg) per cubic metre for saturated soil.
Can UltraCrete Perma-Soil be used with wet soil?
Yes, provided the soil has an appropriate moisture content. Check by squeezing a handful into a ball — if moisture is exuded, the soil is wet and the higher dosage should be used. See the mixing tab for the full moisture check guide.
How do I know if excavated soil has enough moisture for Perma-Soil?
Take a handful of the excavated material and squeeze it into a ball. If it holds together, there is sufficient moisture and the soil is classed as normal. Checking Soil Moisture Before You Start
Before mixing, check the moisture content of your spoil:
- Take a handful of material and squeeze it into a ball. If it holds together, there is sufficient moisture present — soil is classed as normal and Perma-Soil can be used as standard.
- If the ball fails to hold together, add a small amount of water until the material can be classed as normal.
- If the ball exudes moisture when squeezed, the soil should be classified as wet — use the higher dosage rate.
Dosage Rates
Determine material suitability per Appendix A9 of the SROH (Class B, C or D SMF material).
- 25kg bag or bucket: Use 1–2 buckets (25–50kg) of Perma-Soil per cubic metre of spoil. When soil is saturated, use 2 buckets. Never use less than 25kg per cubic metre.
- 12.5kg bucket: Use 2–4 buckets (25–50kg) of Perma-Soil per cubic metre of spoil. When soil is saturated, use 4 buckets. Never use less than 25kg (2 buckets) per cubic metre.
Mixing & Application
- Place spoil on a mixing sheet or board next to the repair site.
- Add Perma-Soil to the spoil as it is excavated or while the repair is being made, and mix thoroughly.
- Prior to backfilling, sprinkle a small amount of Perma-Soil onto the walls of the excavation.
- Compact the stabilised material back into the excavation in 150mm layers, as per Specification for Highways Works Series 800, Section 802 (5–9).
- For a stronger surface cap (e.g. where heavy traffic is expected), add additional stabiliser to the last lift.
- The backfill soil stabiliser should be compacted 60mm below the surface in footpaths and 100mm from the surface in Type 3 & 4 carriageways.
Clegg Hammer Test
A Clegg Hammer Test is recommended once compaction is complete. Required values: 18 IV for a footway, 21 IV for a carriageway.
Drop the Clegg Hammer on the desired area 5 times. The 4th reading is the critical value. If the 5th reading is within +1 or −2 units of the 4th reading, the compaction is acceptable.
Surface Reinstatement
Complete the reinstatement with the surface material. Spray vertical edges of the reinstatement, apparatus and compacted sub-base with UltraCrete SCJ Seal & Tack Coat before applying Instant Road Repair.
- 6mm IRR: Apply to approx. 45mm depth, compact to 30mm, then repeat to achieve 60mm total.
- 10mm IRR: Apply to approx. 45mm, compact to 30mm; repeat; then apply a final 60mm layer and compact to 40mm for the surface course.
Precautions
- Perma-Soil will stain — wear suitable protective clothing and eye/face protection.
- Avoid skin and eye contact.
- Do not exceed the recommended dosage — high Perma-Soil concentrations can raise pH, which may cause corrosion or adversely affect the life of buried services.

Checking Soil Moisture Before You Start
Before mixing, check the moisture content of your spoil:
- Take a handful of material and squeeze it into a ball. If it holds together, there is sufficient moisture present — soil is classed as normal and Perma-Soil can be used as standard.
- If the ball fails to hold together, add a small amount of water until the material can be classed as normal.
- If the ball exudes moisture when squeezed, the soil should be classified as wet — use the higher dosage rate.
Dosage Rates
Determine material suitability per Appendix A9 of the SROH (Class B, C or D SMF material).
- 25kg bag or bucket: Use 1–2 buckets (25–50kg) of Perma-Soil per cubic metre of spoil. When soil is saturated, use 2 buckets. Never use less than 25kg per cubic metre.
- 12.5kg bucket: Use 2–4 buckets (25–50kg) of Perma-Soil per cubic metre of spoil. When soil is saturated, use 4 buckets. Never use less than 25kg (2 buckets) per cubic metre.
Mixing & Application
- Place spoil on a mixing sheet or board next to the repair site.
- Add Perma-Soil to the spoil as it is excavated or while the repair is being made, and mix thoroughly.
- Prior to backfilling, sprinkle a small amount of Perma-Soil onto the walls of the excavation.
- Compact the stabilised material back into the excavation in 150mm layers, as per Specification for Highways Works Series 800, Section 802 (5–9).
- For a stronger surface cap (e.g. where heavy traffic is expected), add additional stabiliser to the last lift.
- The backfill soil stabiliser should be compacted 60mm below the surface in footpaths and 100mm from the surface in Type 3 & 4 carriageways.
Clegg Hammer Test
A Clegg Hammer Test is recommended once compaction is complete. Required values: 18 IV for a footway, 21 IV for a carriageway.
Drop the Clegg Hammer on the desired area 5 times. The 4th reading is the critical value. If the 5th reading is within +1 or −2 units of the 4th reading, the compaction is acceptable.
Surface Reinstatement
Complete the reinstatement with the surface material. Spray vertical edges of the reinstatement, apparatus and compacted sub-base with UltraCrete SCJ Seal & Tack Coat before applying Instant Road Repair.
- 6mm IRR: Apply to approx. 45mm depth, compact to 30mm, then repeat to achieve 60mm total.
- 10mm IRR: Apply to approx. 45mm, compact to 30mm; repeat; then apply a final 60mm layer and compact to 40mm for the surface course.
Precautions
- Perma-Soil will stain — wear suitable protective clothing and eye/face protection.
- Avoid skin and eye contact.
- Do not exceed the recommended dosage — high Perma-Soil concentrations can raise pH, which may cause corrosion or adversely affect the life of buried services.
