Is TileJam Right for Your Paving? Permeable vs Non-Permeable Beds

Before choosing a jointing compound, you need to answer one critical question: where is the water going to go?

Your paving construction determines which product is correct — and getting this wrong can trap moisture, cause staining, algae growth, cracking and joint failure.

• Permeable paving — water drains through the joints into the ground below. Typically a sand and cement bed on a free-draining sub-base.
• Non-permeable paving — water cannot drain downwards and must run off across the surface. Typically paving on a solid concrete base or impermeable sub-base.

ProJoint TileJam is for non-permeable beds only. It forms a solid sealed joint that works with surface drainage. Preparation

• For heavily textured or porous tiles, apply ProJoint Pre-Grout Sealer before grouting to prevent staining.
• Ensure tiles are firmly fixed and joints are clean, fully dry, and free from dust, excess adhesive, bedding mortar and any contamination.
• For external use, allow the bedding mortar to fully cure before grouting — concrete bases typically take 28 days to fully cure.
• Apply only when the temperature is 5°C or above, with no rain or frost forecast within 48 hours of application.

Application Instructions

1. Apply the grout to the wall or floor using a grout float or squeegee, pressing it firmly into the joints until they are fully filled.
2. Remove any excess grout from the tile surface as you work.
3. Once the grout begins to firm up in the joints, clean off any residue with a damp sponge — not wet. Rinse the sponge frequently in clean water. On ceramic tiles this will be after approximately 20 minutes; on porcelain tiles, approximately 45 minutes (at 20°C).
4. After the grout has fully set, remove any remaining haze with a dry, clean cloth.

Curing Times (at 20°C)

• Light foot traffic: 3 hours in dry conditions
• Full cure / normal use: 24 hours in dry conditions
• Showers and wet areas: 3 days minimum before use
• Outdoor installations: protect from rain and frost for 48 hours while curing
• Underfloor heating: do not activate for 10 days; increase temperature gradually to normal operating level

Note: colder temperatures will increase curing times. Higher temperatures will accelerate curing and may affect colour/shade and strength — plan your installation accordingly.

How long does TileJam take to cure?
At 20°C, TileJam accepts light foot traffic after 3 hours and reaches full cure in 24 hours in dry conditions. Showers and wet areas should be left for 3 days before use. Colder temperatures will increase these times; higher temperatures will speed up curing but may affect colour and strength.

What weather conditions can I install TileJam in?
The weather must be dry with no rain or frost forecast within 48 hours of application. Do not apply below 5°C.

Can TileJam be used on natural stone paving?
Yes — but natural stone is porous and will absorb grout more readily than porcelain. Always apply ProJoint Pre-Grout Sealer to the paving surface first to protect against staining and make clean-up much easier.

Can TileJam be used on porcelain paving?
Yes — on non-permeable beds. Prime the underside of each slab with ProJoint Porcelain Primer before bedding, and seal the surface with ProJoint Pre-Grout Sealer before grouting.

What base should the grout be installed onto?
The base must be solid, stable, non-permeable and fully cured and dry prior to grouting. Concrete bases typically take 28 days to fully cure.

Can I use part of the bag and store the rest?
Yes — mix only what you need and re-seal the remainder tightly. Use within 6 months of opening and store away from moisture and extreme temperatures.

Can TileJam be used in and around swimming pools?
Yes — it is suitable for domestic swimming pools with non-aggressive water conditions.

Can I pressure wash TileJam?
Yes — once fully cured, with a domestic-powered washer, maintaining a distance of at least 45cm from the joints.

What is the best way to maintain my joints?
Sweep the area regularly to remove dirt, leaves and debris. For deeper cleaning, use our ProJoint Porcelain Ultimate Cleaner.

Can TileJam be used over underfloor heating?
Yes — but do not activate the heating for 10 days after grouting. Increase the floor temperature gradually to its normal operating level.
