Is TileJam Right for Your Paving? Permeable vs Non-Permeable Beds

Before choosing a jointing compound, you need to answer one critical question: where is the water going to go?

Your paving construction determines which product is correct — and getting this wrong can trap moisture, cause staining, algae growth, cracking and joint failure.

• Permeable paving — water drains through the joints into the ground below. Typically a sand and cement bed on a free-draining sub-base.
• Non-permeable paving — water cannot drain downwards and must run off across the surface. Typically paving on a solid concrete base or impermeable sub-base.

ProJoint TileJam is for non-permeable beds only. It forms a solid sealed joint that works with surface drainage. If your paving is on a permeable bed, we recommend ProJoint RapidFlow instead. When to Choose the 3KG Bag

Why TileJam Works So Well on Porcelain and Natural Stone

Porcelain’s near-zero porosity means grout timing during clean-up is critical — too early and you pull it from the joints, too late and it hazes on the surface. Natural stone is the opposite: highly porous and quick to stain if an unsealed surface contacts wet grout. TileJam’s hybrid flex formula handles both: it firms up predictably (approximately 45 minutes on porcelain at 20°C), cleans off cleanly, and its non-efflorescent composition prevents white salt bloom in the joints over time.

For natural stone, always apply ProJoint Pre-Grout Sealer before grouting. For porcelain, prime the underside of each slab with ProJoint Porcelain Primer before laying on the non-permeable bed.

Preparation

• For porous or textured natural stone, apply ProJoint Pre-Grout Sealer to the paving surface before grouting.
• Ensure paving is firmly bedded and joints are clean, fully dry, and free from dust, adhesive, mortar and contamination.
• Allow the bedding mortar to fully cure — concrete bases typically take 28 days.
• Apply only at 5°C or above, with no rain or frost forecast within 48 hours.

Application Instructions

1. Apply using a grout float or squeegee, pressing firmly into the joints until fully filled.
2. Remove excess grout from the paving surface as you work.
3. Once the grout begins to firm, clean off residue with a damp sponge (not wet), rinsing frequently. On porcelain approximately 45 minutes at 20°C; on ceramic approximately 20 minutes.
4. Once fully set, remove any remaining haze with a dry, clean cloth.

Curing Times (at 20°C)

• Light foot traffic: 3 hours
• Full cure: 24 hours
• Wet areas: 3 days minimum
• Outdoor: protect from rain and frost for 48 hours
• Underfloor heating: do not activate for 10 days; increase temperature gradually

Colder temperatures increase curing times. Higher temperatures accelerate curing and may affect colour and strength.

No — TileJam is designed for non-permeable beds only, where paving sits on a solid concrete or impermeable sub-base and water drains across the surface rather than through the joints. Can I pressure wash TileJam joints?
Yes — once fully cured, with a domestic washer at minimum 45cm from the joints.

When should I choose the 10kg instead?
