Checking Soil Moisture Before You Start
It’s worth doing a quick moisture check on your spoil before mixing:
- Squeeze a handful into a ball. If it holds together, moisture is sufficient — soil is normal and standard dosing applies.
- If it won’t hold together, add a small amount of water until it does.
- If moisture is squeezed out, the soil is wet — use the higher dosage rate.
Dosage Rates
- 25KG bucket: Use 1–2 buckets (25–50kg) per cubic metre of spoil. For saturated soil, use 2 buckets. Never use less than 1 bucket (25kg) per cubic metre.
- 12.5KG bucket: Use 2–4 buckets (25–50kg) per cubic metre of spoil. For saturated soil, use 4 buckets. Never use less than 2 buckets (25kg) per cubic metre.
Mixing & Application
- Lay the excavated spoil on a mixing sheet or board beside the repair area.
- Add Perma-Soil and mix thoroughly into the spoil as excavation progresses or while the repair is underway.
- Before backfilling, sprinkle a small amount of Perma-Soil onto the walls of the excavation.
- Allow 30–60 minutes after mixing before backfilling.
- Compact the stabilised material back into the excavation in 150mm layers, as per Specification for Highways Works Series 800, Section 802 (5–9).
- For a stronger surface cap — particularly where heavy traffic is expected — add extra stabiliser to the final lift.
- Compact 60mm below the surface in footpaths and 100mm below in Type 3 & 4 carriageways.
Clegg Hammer Test
Once compaction is complete, a Clegg Hammer Test is recommended. Required values: 18 IV for a footway, 21 IV for a carriageway. Drop the hammer 5 times — the 4th reading is the critical value. The 5th reading should be within +1 or −2 units of the 4th to be acceptable.
Surface Reinstatement
Spray the vertical edges and compacted sub-base with SCJ Seal & Tack Coat before applying Instant Road Repair.
- 6mm IRR: Apply to approx. 45mm, compact to 30mm, repeat for 60mm total depth.
- 10mm IRR: Apply to approx. 45mm, compact to 30mm; repeat; final 60mm layer compacted to 40mm.
Precautions
- Perma-Soil will stain — wear protective clothing, gloves and eye/face protection.
- Avoid skin and eye contact.
- Do not exceed the recommended dosage — high concentrations raise pH, which can affect buried services.

UltraCrete Perma-Soil Stabiliser Buckets: Stabilise Excavated Spoil On Site, Right Where You Need It
UltraCrete Perma-Soil turns excavated spoil into a high-performance backfill material directly on site — no lorries, no virgin aggregate, no delays. Available in 25KG and 12.5KG resealable buckets, it’s used daily by utilities contractors, telecoms and fibre civils teams, highway maintenance crews and groundworkers across the UK for the backfill and reinstatement of small utility excavations.
The bucket format is particularly well suited to jobs where precise dosing matters — working around water meters, valve boxes, water tobies and overhead poles. What is UltraCrete Perma-Soil?
Perma-Soil is a soil stabiliser that turns suitable excavated spoil into a compliant backfill material on site, within minutes. It’s designed for small utility excavations — water meters, valve boxes, water tobies, overhead poles and similar applications.
Why choose the bucket over the bag?
The bucket format is resealable, easy to store and practical when you need a measured unit on site. The 12.5KG bucket is particularly handy for smaller jobs or where you need to carry product to a confined location. For larger-volume work, the 25KG bag is often more economical per kg.
What sizes does UltraCrete Perma-Soil come in?
On this page you can choose between the 25KG bucket and the 12.5KG bucket. Perma-Soil is also available as a 25KG plastic bag, and pallet deals are available for both formats.
How much Perma-Soil do I need per cubic metre?
For a 25KG bucket, use 1–2 buckets per cubic metre of spoil — use 2 if the soil is saturated. For a 12.5KG bucket, use 2–4 buckets per cubic metre — use 4 for saturated soil. Never use less than 25kg per cubic metre.
How do I check if the soil has enough moisture?
Squeeze a handful of excavated material into a ball. If it holds together, moisture levels are fine — soil is classed as normal. If it won’t hold together, add a little water. If moisture is squeezed out, the soil is wet — use the higher mixing rate.
How do you mix Perma-Soil?
Place the excavated spoil on a mixing sheet next to the repair. Add Perma-Soil and mix thoroughly by hand as you excavate or while the repair is underway. Before backfilling, sprinkle a little Perma-Soil onto the excavation walls. No specialist equipment needed.
How long before you can backfill?
Allow 30–60 minutes after mixing before backfilling. Always follow the current technical datasheet and your site specification.
How quickly does Perma-Soil cure?
It reaches approximately 85% strength within one hour and cures fully within 24 hours.
How thick should the compacted layers be?
Compact in 150mm layers, in accordance with Specification for Highways Works Series 800, Section 802. Compact 60mm below the surface in footpaths and 100mm below in Type 3 & 4 carriageways.
Is Perma-Soil Appendix A9 approved?
Yes. Perma-Soil is Appendix A9 approved and suitable for use in accordance with Appendix A9 of the SROH for SMF and SMR applications.
Can Perma-Soil be re-excavated?
Yes — one of the practical advantages of Perma-Soil is that it can be re-excavated if future access to underground utilities is required.
Is Perma-Soil suitable for wet soil?
Yes, provided moisture content is appropriate. Use the squeeze test to assess the soil and apply the higher dosage rate for saturated soil.
What is the shelf life of Perma-Soil?
8 months from the date of manufacture, stored in an unopened container, clear of the ground, in cool dry conditions and protected from excessive draught.

Our delivery charges are calculated based on the size and weight of your order. When you add items to your basket, the delivery charges are displayed. Small orders are distributed via courier; larger orders via Pallet Network. Collection is available from our Tamworth depot by request (contact us first to arrange on 0330 122 1025).

Checking Soil Moisture Before You Start
It’s worth doing a quick moisture check on your spoil before mixing:
- Squeeze a handful into a ball. If it holds together, moisture is sufficient — soil is normal and standard dosing applies.
- If it won’t hold together, add a small amount of water until it does.
- If moisture is squeezed out, the soil is wet — use the higher dosage rate.
Dosage Rates
- 25KG bucket: Use 1–2 buckets (25–50kg) per cubic metre of spoil. For saturated soil, use 2 buckets. Never use less than 1 bucket (25kg) per cubic metre.
- 12.5KG bucket: Use 2–4 buckets (25–50kg) per cubic metre of spoil. For saturated soil, use 4 buckets. Never use less than 2 buckets (25kg) per cubic metre.
Mixing & Application
- Lay the excavated spoil on a mixing sheet or board beside the repair area.
- Add Perma-Soil and mix thoroughly into the spoil as excavation progresses or while the repair is underway.
- Before backfilling, sprinkle a small amount of Perma-Soil onto the walls of the excavation.
- Allow 30–60 minutes after mixing before backfilling.
- Compact the stabilised material back into the excavation in 150mm layers, as per Specification for Highways Works Series 800, Section 802 (5–9).
- For a stronger surface cap — particularly where heavy traffic is expected — add extra stabiliser to the final lift.
- Compact 60mm below the surface in footpaths and 100mm below in Type 3 & 4 carriageways.
Clegg Hammer Test
Once compaction is complete, a Clegg Hammer Test is recommended. Required values: 18 IV for a footway, 21 IV for a carriageway. Drop the hammer 5 times — the 4th reading is the critical value. The 5th reading should be within +1 or −2 units of the 4th to be acceptable.
Surface Reinstatement
Spray the vertical edges and compacted sub-base with SCJ Seal & Tack Coat before applying Instant Road Repair.
- 6mm IRR: Apply to approx. 45mm, compact to 30mm, repeat for 60mm total depth.
- 10mm IRR: Apply to approx. 45mm, compact to 30mm; repeat; final 60mm layer compacted to 40mm.
Precautions
- Perma-Soil will stain — wear protective clothing, gloves and eye/face protection.
- Avoid skin and eye contact.
- Do not exceed the recommended dosage — high concentrations raise pH, which can affect buried services.
