What is red Tarmac and why is it used?

Instant Road Repair is a red asphalt, the same as standard black variety of bitumen just a differing colour. Red tarmac is usually used in a demarcation areas, to show bus lanes, cycle lanes or particular areas of attention on a carriageways, such as intersections or potential conflict areas. Homeowners may also opt for red tarmac on their driveways. And red macadam is also used in car parks for traffic management and marking-out designated parking bays.

What is Red Tarmac used for?

Generally red tarmac is applied in areas to dissuade traffic from using certain sections of the road. In a nutshell, Instant Road Repair Red is used on transport routes for:

  • Traffic calming
  • Road markings
  • Hard shoulders on motorways and dual carriageways
  • Mini roundabouts
  • Bus lanes
  • Cycle tracks

How long does Instant Road Repair Red last?

As long as IRR Red 6mm is used in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions, it provides a permanent pothole repair material that will last for years.

How long will Instant Road Repair Red take to set?

Instant Road Repair sets immediately upon compaction, so once the repair has been reinstated and tamped down, it will be instantly trafficable.

Does Instant Road Repair Red, or red tarmac fade?

Red tarmac is an incredibly durable and resilient pothole repair material, that does not fade.

What is the Shelf Life for Instant Road Repair Red?

Shelf life in correct conditions for sealed goods is 6 months, stored away from damp and drafts.

Why is my Instant Road Repair Red firm in the bag?

Instant Road Repair may feel a little stiff & firm to the touch, but this doesn’t mean that the material is unusable or has ‘gone off’. The IRR Red pothole repair can sometimes appear firm in the bag or tub, and this can be due to how it has been stored – if stored at the base of a pallet, or how long it has been kept. However the majority of the time it just requires a little light pressure to reactivate the binder within the tarmac to soften it up.

How do I soften up my Instant Road Repair Red?

Applying light pressure, with your knee or elbow to the edge of the Instant Road Repair bag (contained within the tub), will activate the binder in the mixture and will restore the material to its normal, pliable consistency. In particularly cold conditions, you may find that storing the material somewhere warm for 24 hours prior to use will soften the material in the bag or tub considerably.

What other colours and grades does pothole repair or cold-lay tarmac come in?

Handy Tip!

We also recommend using a cold joint spray such as SCJ to create a water proof barrier on the inside surface of your reinstatement, SCJ Cold Joint Spray will also help with adhesion and bond strength.

How to prepare and fill a pothole with Instant Road Repair Red

Follow these eight simple steps to fill a pothole:

  1. Clear the area of dirt and debris.
  2. Cut a neat, vertical ‘picture frame’ around the pothole using a circular saw.
  3. Remove loose tarmac from the hole.
  4. Seal the edges with UltraCrete SCJ cold jointing spray.
  5. Pour the pothole repair into the hole and tamp down.
  6. For larger holes, spray additional cold joint spray into the hole and add another layer of pothole repair.
  7. Thoroughly tamp down the final surface course.
  8. Once fully compacted, the pothole can be driven or walked over immediately.

Potholes form when water enters cracks in tarmac or asphalt, freezes, and weakens the surface, which then breaks under traffic. Instarmac UltraCrete offers fast, durable solutions including Instant Road Repair (IRR 6mm & 10mm), Permanent Pothole Repair (PPR), and Tough Patch for high-traffic areas. SCJ Cold Joint Bitumen Spray prevents water ingress, and Instaband ECO Tape seals repairs. IRR and PPR are bitumen-based and cure after compaction, while Tough Patch is water-activated for rapid curing, providing long-lasting repairs for roads, footpaths, driveways, and carriageways.
