Joint-It Simple is the one we reach for when someone wants a reliable, easy-to-use paving grout that sets rock hard and stays put — year after year.

If you're pointing a patio, path or paved area on a permeable base and want a natural stone paving grout, a porcelain paving jointing compound, or a concrete paving jointing compound that's weed-resistant, frost-resistant, pressure washer safe and suitable for most weather conditions — Joint-It Simple is the product we'd confidently recommend. If you're unsure which colour suits your paving, give us a call.

Permeable or Non-Permeable? Choose the Right Jointing Compound

Your paving construction determines the correct grout.

Permeable paving — water drains through the joints into the ground.
Non-permeable paving — water must drain across the surface.

Using the wrong jointing compound can trap moisture and cause staining, algae, cracking and joint failure. Always ask: "Where is the water going to go?"

Joint-It Simple is a permeable paving jointing compound — suitable for permeable, free-draining beds only. Do NOT use on an impermeable bed or solid concrete base. Trapped moisture can contribute to freeze/thaw damage, causing joints to weaken, crack and fail in colder weather. It can also lead to discolouration, as algae and lichen thrive in damp conditions and can cause the grout to darken or turn black. A 6:1 sand and cement base is recommended.

Step 1 — Soak the paving
Thoroughly soak the paving with clean water before and throughout application. Never allow the surface to dry while working — keep re-wetting as you go.

Step 2 — Apply Joint-It Simple
Open the vacuum-packed bag and tip the product onto the wet paving. Use a hard-bristle brush to sweep the product diagonally into the joints, keeping the surface fully saturated.

Step 3 — Fill and activate the joints
Continue brushing and adding water until the joints are completely filled. Soak the paving again and allow the product to settle for approximately 15–45 minutes, depending on conditions.

Step 4 — Finish
Use a soft-bristle brush to remove excess product and top up any joints that need more material. A finishing tool can be used to compact the joints for additional strength. Sweep up and remove all excess product from the paving surface.

Frequently Asked Questions about Joint-It Simple

How do you apply Joint-It Simple?

Joint-It Simple is a brush-in paving grout applied as a dry sweep-in — no mixing required. Thoroughly soak the paving surface, tip the product onto the wet paving, and use a hard-bristle brush to sweep it diagonally into the joints. Keep the surface saturated throughout. Once the joints are filled, soak the area again and allow 15–45 minutes for the product to settle. Finish by removing any excess with a soft brush and compacting the joints if needed. Full step-by-step guidance is in the application section above.

How do you grout a patio with Joint-It Simple?

Grouting a patio with Joint-It Simple is straightforward: ensure your paving is firmly bedded on a permeable base with joints at least 3mm wide and 25mm deep, then soak the paving thoroughly, brush in the product, keep the surface wet throughout, and allow it to settle before finishing. It's one of the easiest ways to grout a patio without traditional sand and cement pointing — no specialist skills or mixing equipment required. See the full 4-step guide above.

How do you apply resin jointing compound?

Joint-It Simple is not a resin jointing compound — it's a cement-free, polymer-bonded brush-in paving jointing mortar. This is an important distinction: resin jointing compounds such as Joint-It Dynamic involve a two-part chemical curing reaction and are suitable for both permeable and non-permeable bases. Joint-It Simple uses a brush-in method activated by water, and is suitable for permeable bases only. If you need a resin-based jointing compound, Joint-It Dynamic is likely the right product — or give us a call and we'll advise.

How much water do you use with Joint-It Simple?

Joint-It does not specify a fixed water quantity for Simple. The key principle is to keep the paving thoroughly saturated throughout the entire application — soak it before you begin, keep re-wetting as you brush the product in, and soak it again once the joints are filled. Using plenty of water is essential: if the surface dries out during application, the product may not activate properly. There is no such thing as too much water at the brushing-in stage.

How long does Joint-It Simple take to dry?

Joint-It Simple begins to harden within approximately 4 hours under normal conditions. It can be walked on after approximately 24 hours. You should not pressure-wash the joints for at least 30 days to allow full curing. Temperature and weather conditions will affect these timings — colder or wetter weather will slow the process.

How long does Joint-It Simple last?

Joint-It describes Simple as being formulated to stand the test of time and remain in the joints for many years. The product is used by both professionals and homeowners who return to it repeatedly because it holds — and the customer reviews above reflect that. We don't publish a guaranteed lifespan figure because Joint-It don't specify one, and longevity depends on factors like joint depth, sub-base quality, traffic and maintenance. If you'd like to talk through what to expect for your specific project, give us a call.

How much Joint-It Simple do I need?

One 20kg bucket of Joint-It Simple covers approximately 10–15m², depending on joint width, depth, paving format and wastage. Narrower joints and larger slabs will give higher coverage; wider, deeper joints and smaller pavers will use more. If you give us your paving area, slab size and joint dimensions, we can give you a more precise estimate — get in touch or call us on 0330 122 1025.

What joint width does Joint-It Simple require?

Joint-It Simple requires a minimum joint width of 3mm and a minimum joint depth of 25mm. It is not suitable for V-joints or bevelled slabs. If your joints are shallower than 25mm or narrower than 3mm, call us and we'll advise on the most appropriate product.

Is Joint-It Simple easy to use?

Yes — Joint-It Simple is one of the easiest-to-use paving grouts on the market. It's a ready-to-use, ready-mixed formulation that comes straight out of the bucket with no measuring, no mixing and no specialist skills required. You just need a hard-bristle brush, a soft-bristle brush and clean water. It's been designed specifically to make patio jointing straightforward for both professionals and homeowners.

Can Joint-It Simple be applied in the rain?

Yes — Joint-It Simple is an all-weather paving grout that can be applied in light rain. In fact, keeping the paving surface wet throughout application is essential to the process, so a light drizzle is no problem at all. You should avoid heavy rain during the initial curing period once the product is in the joints, but general damp or overcast conditions are fine. This makes it a genuinely practical paving jointing compound for patios in the UK climate.

Is Joint-It Simple suitable for permeable paving?

Yes — Joint-It Simple is specifically a permeable paving jointing compound. It is water-permeable, meaning it allows rainwater to drain through the joints into the ground below. It must always be laid on a permeable, free-draining sub-base — a 6:1 sand and cement base is recommended. Do not use Joint-It Simple on an impermeable or solid concrete base. If your base is non-permeable, Joint-It Dynamic is the product to consider instead.

Can Joint-It Simple be used on porcelain?

Yes — Joint-It Simple is suitable for porcelain paving. We recommend pre-sealing porcelain with a compatible sealer before application to prevent any grout residue bonding to the surface. Always test on a small, discreet area first. If you're unsure whether Simple is right for your specific porcelain paving, give us a call.

Can Joint-It Simple be used on natural stone?

Yes — Joint-It Simple works well on a wide range of natural stone paving, including sandstone, limestone, slate, Yorkstone, granite and quartz. For porous or delicate stone types — such as limestone, flamed or honed granite, black granite and Egyptian stone — we recommend pre-sealing before application to prevent staining. Always test on a small area first if you're unsure about your specific stone type.

Is Joint-It Simple weed resistant?

Yes — once cured, Joint-It Simple forms a hard, dense joint that prevents weed growth. Its seven-adhesive formulation sets rock hard, leaving no gaps for weeds to establish. It is also frost-resistant and pressure-washer resistant (after 30 days of curing).

Important Guidelines

  • Joints must be at least 3mm wide and 25mm deep
  • Not suitable for V-joints
  • Paving must be completely secure with no movement before application
  • Must be installed on a permeable, free-draining base — a 6:1 sand and cement base is recommended
  • Always test on a small, discreet area first
  • Limestone, flamed/honed stone, black granite and Egyptian stone should be sealed before application to prevent staining
  • Wear appropriate protective gloves and eye protection
  • Do not use if temperatures are expected to fall below freezing during application
  • In hot or dry conditions, work in small areas and keep the paving thoroughly wet
  • Light rain is generally suitable, but protect the area from heavy rain during initial curing
  • Do not pressure-wash the joints until they have cured for at least 30 days
  • Keep pets and children away from the area for 24 hours during and after application

Maintenance

Joint-It Simple is low maintenance, but regular care will help keep your patio looking its best. We recommend cleaning with Joint-It So Clean or Joint-It Algae Remover every 3–4 months, particularly after winter or in shaded areas. If a pressure washer is required, use no more than 1500 PSI / 100 bar with a standard fan jet — not a turbo spinner — at a 45° angle and at least half a metre from the surface. Never aim directly at the joints.

If pets regularly use the paving, wash the area regularly to help prevent damage caused by acidic urine.

Not the Right Product for You?

If your base is non-permeable or solid concrete, Joint-It Simple won't work — but Joint-It Dynamic might. Joint-It Dynamic is a two-part resin paving joint system designed for use with both permeable and non-permeable beds. Suitable for joints of at least 5mm wide and 20mm deep, it's ideal for natural stone, concrete and porcelain paving in three UV-stable colours: Buff, Grey and Black.
