How to Apply IRR 10mm & SCJ
Stage 1 — Prepare the Area
- Saw cut a 'picture frame' around the full repair or reinstatement area.
- Remove all loose material and debris. The area does not need to be dry.
Stage 2 — Apply SCJ Cold Joint Spray
- Shake the SCJ can well before use.
- Spray SCJ directly onto all vertical faces of the excavation and the substrate (the base).
- Allow a few seconds for the tack coat to become touch-dry before placing IRR.
Stage 3 — Place and Compact IRR 10mm
- For reinstatements up to 100mm depth, use the layer-on-layer method: apply IRR to approximately 45mm depth and compact to 30mm for each layer.
- Before applying each additional layer, re-apply SCJ to the vertical edges of the previous layer.
- For the final surface layer, apply IRR to approximately 45mm and compact to 30mm.
- Compact in accordance with Appendix 8 of the SROH* Fourth Edition 2020.
Stage 4 — Seal the Joint
- After final compaction, apply SCJ to the joint between the repair and the surrounding surface.
- Where specified, apply UltraCrete Instaband ECO thermoplastic overbanding tape over the sealed joint.

IRR 10mm & SCJ Full Pallet Bundle FAQs
I'm Cleo, owner of The Paving Experts, with over 25 years in the construction industry working with businesses including Tarmac and Instarmac. I work alongside a small team of incredibly knowledgeable and caring individuals who share the same passion for getting it right. The FAQ answers below come from the questions we're asked every single day.
Do I really need to use SCJ with IRR?
Yes — SCJ is what makes the repair permanent. Applied to all vertical edges and the substrate before filling, it creates a waterproof bituminous bond that prevents water getting under the repair. Without it, water ingress is the most common reason reinstatements fail prematurely.
How do I apply SCJ?
Shake the can well and spray directly onto the vertical faces of the excavation and the substrate before placing IRR. Re-apply to vertical edges before each additional layer of IRR. After final compaction, apply SCJ to the joint between the repair and the surrounding surface. No brushes or mixing required — aerosol application throughout.
How many cans of SCJ do I need for 56 bags of IRR?
A box of 12 cans is included in this deal. Exact usage depends on the number, size and depth of individual repairs — call us on 0330 122 1025 if you want to sense-check quantities for a specific programme.
Can SCJ be used in the rain?
Yes — SCJ can be applied in all weathers. It's one of the reasons IRR and SCJ are the combination of choice for reactive maintenance work whatever the conditions.
Is SCJ available separately?
Yes — see UltraCrete SCJ single can or contact us for box pricing on 0330 122 1025.
Is IRR 10mm a permanent repair?
Yes. When applied correctly with SCJ on all edges and substrate, IRR 10mm provides a first-time permanent reinstatement. HAPAS approved since 2002.
What surfaces is IRR 10mm designed for?
Type 3 and 4 roads, footways, footpaths and cycle tracks. For footways, cycle tracks and car parks where the repair depth is less than 30mm, IRR 6mm is the correct specification (minimum depth 15mm).
What is the difference between 6mm and 10mm?
6mm is for footways, footpaths, cycle tracks, car parks and driveways (minimum 15mm depth). 10mm is for Type 3 and 4 roads (minimum 30mm). If your repair is on a trafficked road and is at least 30mm deep, 10mm is the correct specification.
Should I choose bags or tubs?
Both contain 25kg of the same IRR 10mm material. Bags give better pallet efficiency (56 vs 52 tubs) and suit larger programmes or bulk purchasing. Tubs are resealable, stackable and easy to carry to the point of repair — preferred by contractors moving between jobs. Once opened, all material should be used.
How quickly can the area be opened to traffic?
Instantly — once correctly compacted, immediately trafficable for both pedestrians and vehicles. No curing wait required.
Can I use IRR 10mm in the rain?
IRR 10mm is compaction-cured and can be used in light rain. If heavy or persistent rain is forecast, UltraCrete Tough Patch is the better product — it is water-cured and specifically designed for wet conditions.
When should I use Tough Patch instead of IRR 10mm?
UltraCrete Tough Patch is recommended for areas requiring maximum skid resistance and for use in heavy or persistent rain. Call us on 0330 122 1025 if you're unsure.
Why is my IRR firm in the bag?
Bags at the bottom of a stack can appear firm due to the weight above. Apply light pressure to the edge of the bag to restore normal consistency. In cold weather, store somewhere warm overnight before use.
Is IRR 10mm approved for use on the London Underground?
Yes — both IRR 10mm and SCJ are approved for use on the London Underground and Overground.
Is red IRR 10mm available?
Yes — red IRR 10mm is available. Call us on 0330 122 1025 for availability and pricing.
What is the shelf life?
IRR 10mm: 6 months from date of manufacture in sealed bags. Once opened, all material should be used. SCJ: check individual cans for date of manufacture — store in a cool, well-ventilated place.
Is a smaller bundle available?
Yes — see our 24-bag half pallet & 12 SCJ cans deal with free delivery to England & Wales. For bespoke quantities or programme pricing, call us on 0330 122 1025.

Why Buy IRR and SCJ Together?
SCJ isn't optional — it's the product that makes the repair permanent. Applied to all vertical edges and the substrate before filling with IRR, SCJ creates a waterproof bituminous bond that prevents water ingress and significantly extends repair life. Buying them together means you have everything on site to complete the job correctly from the start.
