What is UltraCrete Instant Road Repair 6mm?
Instant Road Repair 6mm is a HAPAS Approved permanent cold-lay surfacing asphalt concrete for first-time permanent reinstatements in footways, footpaths, cycle tracks, car parks and driveways. It is manufactured with fully graded, high PSV (65) interlocking aggregate and a specially formulated bitumen containing polymers and flexibilisers — giving it an easy-work, easy-compact formula that performs in all weather conditions, including light rain.
Unlike temporary repair materials that require revisiting, IRR 6mm is designed for first-time permanent reinstatement. When used with UltraCrete SCJ Seal and Tack Spray, the repair is permanent and immediately trafficable once compacted. It also forms part of the UltraCrete HAPAS Approved Ironwork Reinstatement System, and is approved for use on the London Underground and Overground.
6mm vs 10mm — Which Grade Do I Need?
The key difference between IRR 6mm and IRR 10mm is not simply aggregate size — it is the intended application and minimum repair depth. Both grades use fully graded, high-PSV interlocking aggregate and specially formulated bitumen with polymers and flexibilisers. Both are instantly trafficable once compacted. The distinction is where and how deep the repair is.
| IRR 6mm | IRR 10mm | |
|---|---|---|
| Aggregate | Nominal 6mm | Nominal 10mm |
| Primary application | Footways, footpaths, cycle tracks, car parks & driveways | Type 3 & 4 roads |
| Min–max repair depth | 15–100mm | 30–100mm |
| Traffic type | Pedestrian, cycle & light vehicle | Motor vehicle / carriageway |
| Pallet quantity (bags) | 56 x 25kg bags | 56 x 25kg bags |
| Pallet quantity (tubs) | 52 x 25kg tubs | 52 x 25kg tubs |
The minimum depth matters: if the repair is 20mm deep, IRR 6mm is the correct specification — IRR 10mm's stated minimum is 30mm. If you're unsure, call us on 0330 122 1025.
There is also a Red IRR 6mm version for colour-coded surfaces such as cycle tracks, bus stops, traffic cushions and ramps.
Need Even More Skid Resistance?
For high-stress applications such as turning circles, lorry parks, bus lanes or areas where maximum skid resistance is critical, UltraCrete Tough Patch is the recommended product. It is specifically formulated for areas subject to braking, turning and repeated heavy vehicle stress. Call us on 0330 122 1025 if you're unsure which product is right for your application.
Bag vs Tub — Which Format Should I Choose?
Both formats contain 25kg of the same Instant Road Repair material. Once opened, all material should be used. The choice is about how you work on site.
| 25kg Bag | 25kg Tub | |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Larger repairs, bulk purchasing | Contractors across multiple site jobs |
| Units per pallet | 56 | 52 |
| Stackable | No | Yes — easy to handle and move around site |
| Once opened | Use all material | Use all material |
Choose a bag if you're completing larger repairs or buying in bulk, expect to use the full 25kg, or want better pallet efficiency (56 bags vs 52 tubs).
Choose a tub if you're a contractor moving between jobs on a major site and need a stackable, rigid container that's easy to handle and carry to the point of repair.
Quick Decision Guide
Choose IRR 6mm (this product) if:
- You're repairing a footway, footpath, cycle track, car park or driveway
- The repair is between 15–100mm deep
- You need a red option for colour-coded surfaces — see IRR Red 6mm
Choose IRR 10mm if:
- You're repairing a Type 3 or 4 road carrying motor vehicle traffic
- The repair is between 30–100mm deep
Choose Tough Patch if:
- You need maximum skid resistance — turning circles, lorry parks, bus lanes, braking areas
- The surface is subject to repeated heavy vehicle stress or turning loads
- You're working in heavy or persistent rain — Tough Patch is water-cured, not compaction-cured
Complete Reinstatement System
- UltraCrete SCJ Seal and Tack Spray — applied to vertical edges and substrate before and between layers
- UltraCrete Instant Road Repair 6mm — the reinstatement material
- UltraCrete Instaband ECO — overbanding sealant applied if required after compaction
All compaction should be carried out in accordance with Appendix 8 of the SROH 2020.

UltraCrete Instant Road Repair 6mm FAQs
I'm Cleo, owner of The Paving Experts, with over 25 years in the construction industry working with businesses including Tarmac and Instarmac. I work alongside a small team of incredibly knowledgeable and caring individuals who share the same passion for getting it right. The FAQ answers below come from the questions we're asked every single day.
Is Instant Road Repair 6mm a permanent repair?
Yes. When applied in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions — including the use of UltraCrete SCJ to seal edges and substrate — Instant Road Repair 6mm provides a first-time permanent reinstatement. HAPAS approved since 2002 as a permanent cold-lay surfacing material.
Can I use IRR 6mm on a car park or driveway?
Yes — IRR 6mm is suitable for car parks and driveways as well as footways, footpaths and cycle tracks. For high-stress areas subject to braking or turning loads, UltraCrete Tough Patch offers greater skid resistance and is the better specification.
How quickly can the repaired area be opened to traffic?
Instantly — once compacted, the area is immediately trafficable. No curing wait required.
Can I use Instant Road Repair 6mm in the rain?
IRR 6mm is compaction-cured and can be used in light rain. If heavy or persistent rain is forecast, UltraCrete Tough Patch is the better product — it is water-cured rather than compaction-cured, and is specifically designed for wet conditions.
What is the difference between the 6mm and 10mm grade?
The 6mm grade is for footways, footpaths, cycle tracks, car parks and driveways (min depth 15mm). The 10mm grade is for Type 3 and 4 roads carrying motor vehicle traffic (min depth 30mm). If your repair is shallower than 30mm, 6mm is the correct specification.
When should I use Tough Patch instead of IRR 6mm?
UltraCrete Tough Patch is recommended for areas requiring maximum skid resistance, for heavy or persistent rain (it is water-cured), and for surfaces subject to repeated braking or turning loads. Call us on 0330 122 1025 if you're unsure.
Should I choose a bag or a tub?
Both contain 25kg of the same material — once opened, all material should be used. Choose a bag for larger repairs or bulk purchases (better pallet efficiency: 56 vs 52 tubs). Choose a tub if you're a contractor who needs a stackable, rigid container that's easy to move around site between jobs.
Do I need to use SCJ?
Yes — UltraCrete strongly recommend SCJ Seal and Tack Spray on all vertical edges and substrate, and between layers. It creates a waterproof bond and significantly improves repair longevity.
Why is my IRR firm in the bag?
Bags at the bottom of a pallet can appear firm. Apply light pressure to the edge of the bag to restore normal consistency. In cold weather, store somewhere warm overnight before use.
What is the shelf life?
6 months from date of manufacture in sealed conditions. Once opened, all material should be used.
Is a pallet deal available?
Yes — see our 56-bag pallet deal with free standard delivery to England & Wales. Bulk pricing on 40+ bags — call 0330 122 1025.
Is Instant Road Repair 6mm approved for use on the London Underground?

Yes — approved for use on both the London Underground and Overground.
