Preparation

Prior to installing ProJoint PolySweep, ensure that pavement joints and surface are completely dry and clean. Ensure that there is no rain forecast for at least 12 hours after installation. If there is a possibility of rain shortly after installation, cover the area with a tarpaulin sheet and remove it as soon as the threat of rain is gone.

Install ProJoint PolySweep when the average air temperature is above 5°C for a minimum of 48 hours after installation. Always wear appropriate PPE, including eyewear and a dust mask.

Paving should be laid on a permeable bedding mix, as PolySweep cures when it dries out — water and rain must have a route of escape. Check that joints are cleaned out to a minimum depth of 20mm, observing a minimum joint width of 1mm. Ensure paving is firmly bedded and stable before filling joints. Remove all weeds and debris before application to ensure the joints bond properly and prevent weeds from regrowing.

Application

1. Distribute PolySweep evenly across the surface. Sweep sand into joints until full, being careful not to push the product over long distances on the surface. After the joints are filled, sweep excess product from the surface.
2. For block pavers, run a vibrating plate compactor (wacker plate) over the blocks to allow the vibrations to consolidate sand particles into the joints and reduce voids. For paving slabs and setts, attach a rubber mat onto a wacker plate to vibrate sand particles into voids. Alternatively, a rubber mallet with a piece of wood will suffice. Sweep additional sand into the joints if necessary so that the height of the sand is approximately 3mm below the pavement surface — do not overfill joints. Remove excess product from the surface. Repeat compaction.
3. After the joints are filled, sweep the surface with a soft brush, then use a leaf blower held at a slight angle but close to parallel to the surface to remove any excess sand or dust. Without a leaf blower, brush the surface multiple times to remove all excess sand and dust. Take care not to remove sand from the joints.
4. Using a hose, gently mist the paving — no more than 45m² at a time. Allow water to absorb for approximately 5 minutes and repeat the misting process three to four times, each time gradually adding more volume of water. It is crucial that the water penetrates through the whole joint, not just the top layer. The last watering should be sufficient to rinse off any residual material from the surface. Check moisture depth in a joint with a screwdriver to confirm full penetration — replace sand and apply additional misting only if water hasn't penetrated fully.
5. Any residual surface water caught in the texture of the pavers or natural stone should be blown off with a leaf blower or removed with a soft brush.
6. Leave to cure. ProJoint PolySweep contains no Portland cement. Cure times are dependent on temperature and humidity — as a guide, paving can accept traffic after 24 hours. Cool, damp and overcast conditions will decrease curing speed.

Caution

Do not apply too much water too fast — allow water to absorb for approximately 5 minutes before repeating the misting process. Ensure the surface of the paving is clean prior to application. A suitable paving cleaner can be used to remove dirt, algae and dust from the joints and pavers. Following cleaning, make sure the pavers and joints are completely dry before installing PolySweep.

Do not apply this product to any wet or damp surface — the polymeric sand will adhere to the surface and is difficult to remove. When pressure washing, keep the nozzle at least 30cm away from the surface at 40 degrees to the pavers and do not target the joints. Pressure washer surface cleaners are the most effective way of cleaning pavers without harming the joints. ProJoint PolySweep has a low level of permeability — pavers must have adequate drainage and/or falls.

What Causes Polymeric Sheen?

Polymeric residue or haze occasionally appears on paver surfaces after installation. This is almost always related to application technique rather than any fault with the product. The most common causes are:

• Residual sand left on the surface before wetting — always use a leaf blower for a final pass before activating
• Too much water applied too quickly — mist gently and allow absorption between passes
• Insufficient compaction — compact thoroughly before wetting
• Residual surface water left to evaporate — blow or brush off pooled water before curing

Removing polymeric residue (always test on a small area first):

• Light residue: mild washing-up liquid and water with a soft brush
• Medium residue: equal parts white vinegar and water, scrub and rinse
• Heavy residue: ProJoint Eliminator, or careful use of a pressure washer at moderate pressure

How long does PolySweep take to cure?

Do I have to remove all the weeds before application?
Yes — it's important to remove all weeds and debris before applying PolySweep. This ensures the joints bond properly and prevents weeds from regrowing beneath the surface.

Do I have to use a whacker plate during install?
Using a whacker plate is recommended for the best results, as it helps compact the joints and ensures a strong bond. For smaller areas, a rubber mallet and a piece of wood will suffice.

I don't have a leaf blower — can I go without one?
A leaf blower is helpful for removing excess product from the paving surface, but it's not essential. A soft brush can also do the trick — just take care not to dislodge the jointing material from the joints.

How long can it not be rained on after application?
PolySweep needs to stay dry for at least 24 hours after application. If rain is forecast, it's best to cover the area with a tarpaulin to protect it. Remove the tarpaulin once conditions improve.

Why should the bedding mortar be permeable?
PolySweep cures when it dries out, so water must have a route of escape. A permeable sub-base also allows water collecting in the joints to drain freely, stopping it from building up and becoming stagnant — stagnant water can soften the binder over time and encourage algae growth.

When you say permeable bedding/base mix, what does this mean?
A 5:1 ratio of sand and cement (or above) is classed as permeable. Using a specific permeable bedding or base mortar is also acceptable.
