How to Mix and Apply Fuga Pave Flex XP Grout – Complete Step-by-Step Guide

Mixing and applying Fuga Pave Flex XP grout correctly is the key to achieving strong, durable, and consistent paving joints. This guide walks you through the full process—from mixing to cleanup—so you can get a smooth, lump-free finish that lasts.

Equipment You’ll Need
  • Clean mixing bucket
  • Paddle mixer or drill with mixing attachment
  • Measuring jug for accurate water measurement
  • Fuga Pave Flex XP 5KG Tub grout powder
  • Rubber float or neoprene squeegee
  • Pedalo Washboy (for quick and efficient cleanup)
Water-to-Grout Ratios
  • 5kg Tub (1 bag in the tub) → Approx. 0.845 litres of clean water (you may add up to 1 litre if needed for workability)
  • 15kg Tub (3 x 5KG bags in the tub) → Approx. 3 litres of clean water (always use 0.845 litres first, add more up to 1ltr if needed)
  • 💡 Tip: Always start with about three-quarters of the water first, then add the rest gradually to reach the perfect consistency.
Step-by-Step Mixing Instructions
  1. Add water to the bucket
  2. Pour your measured clean water into a clean mixing bucket.
  3. Add grout powder gradually
  4. Slowly pour one 5kg bag of Fuga Pave Flex XP grout powder into the water while mixing from the bottom up using your paddle mixer.
  5. Mix to a smooth consistency
  6. Continue mixing, adding the remaining water slowly until you get a smooth, lump-free texture—similar to thick cake batter.
  7. Check consistency - The mix should be thick enough to trowel into joints but creamy enough for easy application. Do not exceed 1 litre of water per 5kg bag.
Important Mixing Tips
  • Mix one bag at a time to maintain consistency and work within the product’s pot life (approx. 60 minutes at 20°C).
  • Avoid over mixing—this can trap air and reduce grout strength.
  • Always use clean water and tools—contamination can cause discolouration or weaken the grout.
  • Temperature matters: Above 20°C (never above 25°C): Start early before slabs heat up. Work quickly, ideally as a two-person team, and lightly mist the area to slow setting time.
  • Cold weather: Store grout in a frost-free space and mix with lukewarm (not hot) water. Never apply to frozen ground.
  • Keep batches consistent—use the same water-to-grout ratio every time to maintain uniform colour.
Applying Fuga Pave Flex XP Grout
  1. Spread the grout using a rubber float or neoprene squeegee, working diagonally across the joints.
  2. Press firmly to ensure all joints are fully filled.
  3. Remove excess grout from the surface immediately by holding the float at a 45° angle.
Cleanup – The Fast & Effective Way
  • Start cleaning after 15–30 minutes—when grout begins to firm but before it fully hardens.
  • Use a Pedalo Washboy for quick, controlled cleaning. Begin immediately after grouting, as the rollers wring out excess water to prevent over-wetting and leave a clean finish.
  • Lightly dampen the sponge and wipe diagonally across tiles to remove residue.
  • Rinse the sponge frequently and refresh water as needed.
  • Final polish with a clean, dry cloth once the surface is completely dry.
  • 💡 Pro Tip: Having another person on hand during cleanup speeds up the process and prevents the grout from curing on the surface.
Sealing for Extra Protection

If working with porous stones such as slate, black/blue limestone, honed black granite, sandstone, or limestone, pre-sealing can prevent grout staining. Use a quality pre-grout sealer such as ProJoint Pre-Grout Sealer or Tile Rite Patio Prep—both are invisible, easy to apply, and suitable for natural stone and concrete paving.

Curing Time
  • Light foot traffic: Allow at least 24 hours.
  • Heavy loads or wet areas: Allow 72 hours for full curing.

By following this guide, your Fuga Pave Flex XP grout will have the perfect consistency, strength, and colour uniformity, resulting in a professional finish that stands the test of time.

⚠️ Additional Tips & Notes for FUGA-PAVE FLEX XP

  • Do not apply in temperatures below 5°C or above 20°C.
  • Avoid excessive water during cleaning to prevent washing out the joints.
  • Always test on a small inconspicuous area if unsure about surface compatibility.
  • Tip: Always start with about three-quarters of the water first, then add the rest gradually to reach the perfect consistency.
  • Clean tools and equipment with water immediately after use.
  • Not suitable for movement joints
  • We recommend the use a pre-grout sealant to ensure easy clean-up and removal of grout

Part of the Complete FUGA-PAVE System

FLEX XP Grout works seamlessly as the final stage of the FUGA-PAVE Outdoor Tiling System, which includes:

Cleo, owner of The Paving Experts says:

"We’re big fans of the new FUGA-PAVE FLEX XP Grout – it’s basically the updated version of what used to be known as ‘Part C’, but with some great upgrades. It now comes in either a 5KG tub or a 15KG bucket, and inside the 15KG you get smaller 5KG bags, which is super handy. Less waste, less mess – and ideal if you don’t need to use it all in one go. Just open a bag, use what you need, and seal the tub for later. Simple.

Plus, the buckets are lighter and reusable, which is a big win when you're lugging kit around site all day!

It’s a top-quality hybrid grout – strong, flexible, and easy to work with. You can start mixing it by hand with a bucket and trowel, then finish it off with a paddle mixer. Aim for a thick, creamy consistency – think cake batter that’s stiff enough to trowel into your joints.

A little tip from us: mix it in smaller batches, especially if you’re working on a warm day, because it can start to go off fairly quickly. Once you get the hang of it though, it’s smooth sailing. One of the best things? No white stains. Seriously – no efflorescence, no patchy marks. Just clean, crisp grout lines in five great colours. It’s a proper pro product, whether you’re doing a sleek porcelain patio or a detailed stone pathway.”
