FUGA-PAVE FLEX XP is a flexible, hybrid cement-based porcelain paving grout that forms the final stage of the FUGA-PAVE outdoor tiling system. Mixing and applying it correctly is the key to achieving strong, durable and consistent paving joints. Follow this guide from preparation through to clean-up.

Before You Start

Make sure your paving has been correctly installed and that the joints are clean, free from debris and sufficiently deep. Remove any excess mortar from the joints before grouting. If you’re using a new or particularly porous paving product, test a small area first to check compatibility and confirm your clean-up timing.

FUGA-PAVE FLEX XP Mixing Ratio

The FUGA-PAVE FLEX XP mixing ratio is approximately 0.85–1 litre of clean water per 5kg of grout. Always start with most of the water and gradually add the grout powder while mixing. For the 15KG tub, work one 5kg bag at a time.

• 5kg tub (1 bag) → approximately 0.845 litres of clean water (up to 1 litre maximum)
• 15kg tub (3 × 5kg bags) → approximately 0.845 litres per bag, added gradually — always start with three-quarters of the water, then add the remainder to reach the correct consistency

Mix until you achieve a smooth, creamy, lump-free consistency — similar to thick cake batter. Allow the mixture to stand briefly, then remix before applying. Only mix as much as you can use within its working time (approximately 60 minutes under standard conditions, less in warm weather). Do not add extra water once the grout has begun to stiffen.

Mixing Tips

• Mix one bag at a time to maintain consistency and colour uniformity across the whole project
• Keep the FUGA-PAVE FLEX XP mixing ratio identical between batches — variations in water quantity can cause subtle colour differences
• Avoid overmixing — this can trap air and reduce grout strength
• Always use clean water and clean tools — contamination can cause discolouration or weaken the grout
• In warm weather: mix smaller batches and work quickly — pot life reduces as temperature rises
• Cold weather: store in a frost-free space and mix with lukewarm (not hot) water. Never apply to frozen ground or below 5°C

Applying FUGA-PAVE FLEX XP Grout

1. Spread the grout across the paving using a rubber float or neoprene squeegee, working diagonally across the joints.
2. Press firmly to ensure all joints are completely filled — avoid leaving gaps or voids, as these allow water to penetrate and can affect the long-term performance of the installation.
3. Remove excess grout from the surface immediately as you work, holding the float at a 45° angle.

Cleaning the Paving

Once the grout has begun to firm up — typically after 15–30 minutes — clean the surface using a damp sponge or Pedalo Washboy and clean water. A Pedalo is particularly efficient here, as the rollers wring out excess water automatically, preventing over-wetting.

• Work diagonally across the joints to avoid pulling grout out as you clean
• Change the wash water regularly and avoid using excessive water
• Rinse the sponge frequently
• Remove any remaining grout film before it hardens — once dry, it is significantly harder to remove
• Final polish with a clean, dry cloth once the surface is completely dry

Sealing for Extra Protection

For porous natural stone paving such as slate, black/blue limestone, honed black granite or sandstone, pre-sealing before grouting can help prevent grout staining and make clean-up easier.
