About the product

The Tile Rite Professional Tilers Washboy Set (product code PWS366) is one of the most practical and well-specified washboys available at this price point — and it’s a product our customers consistently come back to tell us they’re delighted with. Built around a heavy-duty triple roller system and removable metal separation grid, it makes grout clean-up significantly faster and more controlled than working with a basic bucket and sponge — and considerably more efficient than using a hose or pressure washer, which risks overwatering freshly grouted joints.

Suitable for cleaning Flowpoint, Flowpoint Fine, Porcelpoint, FUGA-PAVE FLEX XP, Nexus Pro-Joint Titan, Joint-It Dynamic, Larsen FJM and other cementitious paving and tile grouts — interior and exterior.

We’re a small, family-run business — I’m Cleo, the owner, with over 25 years in the construction industry working with businesses including Tarmac and Instarmac. I work alongside a team of incredibly knowledgeable and caring individuals, and between us we’ve seen a lot of washboys come and go. The Tile Rite Professional is one we’re happy to recommend — it’s a serious, heavy-duty piece of kit for paving contractors, landscapers and tilers who want the benefits of a proper washboy system at a price that makes sense.

For a more economical option for homeowner or occasional use, see the Tile Rite Budget Tilers Washboy Set. Not sure which is right for you? Give us a call and we’ll help.

What is a Washboy?

A washboy is a specialist grout cleaning system designed for tilers, landscapers and paving contractors. Traditional grout clean-up relied on a basic bucket, a hose, or a pressure washer — all of which can overwater joints, disturb freshly applied grout, and leave more residue to deal with. A washboy solves these problems with a separation system: clean water sits above a metal grid, the sponge is wrung through rollers to remove excess water, and grout residue falls below the grid and out of contact with the clean water above. The result is a cleaner sponge with every dip, faster clean-up, and less water used overall.

Tile Rite claim washboys can save up to 40% of cleaning time compared with traditional cleaning using a hose and water. In our experience, the time saving is very real — particularly on larger paving jobs where repeated trips to change water or retrieve a hose add up quickly.

Professional vs Budget — What’s the Difference?

Tile Rite make two 23-litre washboy sets. Both include wheel castors, a grip-moulded handle, a 285 × 140 × 30mm segmented sponge float and a separation grid. The key differences are:

Professional PWS366 Budget WBS231
Rollers Heavy-duty triple roller Twin roller
Separation grid Metal Plastic
Bucket colour Blue Black
Best for Professional, regular use Homeowner, occasional use

The triple roller system and metal grid are the meaningful upgrades — both are components that take repeated heavy use on site, and the Professional versions are built to last considerably longer. For regular use across multiple jobs, the Professional PWS366 is the right choice. For occasional homeowner use, the Budget WBS231 represents better value.

What’s Included

  • 23-litre blue plastic bucket with wheel castors
  • Grip-moulded handle
  • Heavy-duty triple roller system
  • 1 x segmented sponge float (285 × 140 × 30mm)
  • 1 x removable metal separation grid

Key Benefits

  • Triple roller system — heavy-duty rollers wring the sponge efficiently before each pass, removing excess water and improving cleaning performance
  • Metal separation grid — grout residue falls below the grid and settles at the bottom of the bucket, keeping the water above the grid cleaner for longer
  • Segmented sponge float — the segmented 285 × 140 × 30mm sponge follows the contours of uneven and riven paving surfaces more effectively than a plain sponge
  • 23-litre capacity — reduces the need for frequent water changes, particularly useful on larger paving or tiling jobs
  • Wheel castors — move the bucket easily across the patio or site without lifting
  • No wet hands — the roller system means there’s no need to wring the sponge by hand, keeping the process clean and efficient
  • More controlled than a hose — reduces the risk of overwatering freshly grouted joints
  • Replaceable sponge — the sponge float is a replaceable component; the washboy itself does not need replacing when the sponge wears out

How to Use the Tile Rite Professional Washboy

  1. Apply the grout to the tiles or slabs as normal.
  2. Fill the washboy with clean water to approximately 20–30mm above the separation grid.
  3. Submerge the sponge float in the clean water.
  4. Push the sponge horizontally through the triple rollers to remove excess water — make sure none spills over the edge onto your tiles or slabs.
  5. Move the sponge in a horizontal motion across the tiles or paving and grouted joints to clean off excess grout.
  6. Rub the sponge across the metal separation grid to release the grout from the sponge — the residue falls below the grid and settles at the bottom of the bucket, leaving the water above the grid cleaner.
  7. Repeat from step 3, changing the water regularly as it becomes heavily contaminated.
  8. Continue until the surface is clean.

Grouting Large Areas Regularly? A Pedalo May Be Worth Considering

If you’re a landscaper or paving contractor grouting large patios on a regular basis, it’s worth knowing that a pedalo takes the washboy concept a step further. The Raimondi Pedalo Large Floor Washboy Kit is a floor-standing unit with a 40-litre tank, a foot-operated roller system and a long-handled sponge float — designed to be used from a fully upright, standing position without any bending down at all. No bending to wring the sponge, no lifting or moving the bucket mid-job.

It’s a different class of investment to a standard washboy, but for professionals grouting regularly across large areas it genuinely changes how the clean-up stage feels on site. If you’d like to know more or talk through whether it’s the right fit for the kind of work you do, give us a call — we’re always happy to help.

Tile Rite Professional Washboy FAQs

I’m Cleo, owner of The Paving Experts, with over 25 years in the construction industry working with businesses including Tarmac and Instarmac. I work alongside a small team of incredibly knowledgeable and caring individuals who share the same passion for getting it right. The FAQ answers below come from the questions we’re asked every single day.

What is included in the Tile Rite Professional Washboy Set?

The set includes a 23-litre blue plastic bucket with wheel castors, grip-moulded handle, heavy-duty triple roller system, one segmented sponge float (285 × 140 × 30mm) and one removable metal separation grid. Product code PWS366.

What is the difference between the Professional and Budget Washboy?

The Professional PWS366 has a heavy-duty triple roller system, metal separation grid and a blue bucket. The Budget WBS231 has a twin roller system, plastic grid and a black bucket. Both are 23-litre capacity and use the same 285 × 140 × 30mm segmented sponge float. The Professional is the right choice for regular professional use; the Budget is better suited to homeowners and occasional use.

Is there anything more heavy-duty than the Professional Washboy?

Yes — for landscapers and paving contractors grouting large areas regularly, the Raimondi Pedalo Large Floor Washboy Kit is a significant step up. It has a 40-litre tank, a foot-operated roller system and is designed to be used fully upright — no bending down to wring the sponge at all.

What grouts can I use it with?

It is suitable for cleaning Flowpoint, Flowpoint Fine, Porcelpoint, FUGA-PAVE FLEX XP, Nexus Pro-Joint Titan, Joint-It Dynamic, Larsen FJM and other cementitious paving and tile grouts.

Can I use it for outdoor paving grout clean-up?

Yes. It is suitable for both internal and external use — paving slabs, porcelain, natural stone, wall tiles and floor tiles. Tile Rite list the PWS366 under both their tiling and landscaping product ranges.

What does the metal separation grid do?

The metal grid sits inside the bucket and separates the cleaning water from the grout residue. As you rub the sponge across the grid, the grout is released from the sponge and falls below the grid, settling at the bottom of the bucket. The water above the grid stays cleaner for longer, so you can clean the sponge repeatedly without immediately contaminating it.

Why use a washboy instead of a hose or pressure washer?

A hose or pressure washer can overwater freshly grouted joints, which risks disturbing the grout before it has cured and can contribute to efflorescence. A washboy gives you much more controlled, targeted clean-up — using significantly less water, applied directly with a sponge rather than across the whole area.

Is the sponge replaceable?

Yes. The 285 × 140 × 30mm segmented sponge float is a replaceable component — when the sponge wears out, you replace the sponge rather than the whole washboy. Contact us if you need a replacement sponge.

How often should I change the water?

Change the water whenever it becomes heavily contaminated with grout residue. Working with dirty water will transfer residue back onto the surface rather than cleaning it. The 23-litre capacity and metal separation grid help extend the time between changes compared to a basic bucket.

A washboy is a specially designed bucket with a sponge float used to clean and remove excess paving grout from tile and paving slabs. They are ideal for large areas, ensuring grout residue is removed efficiently without damaging the joint. Using a washboy helps prevent haze, staining, and uneven grout surfaces.
