How do I mix & apply Flowpoint Smooth Paving Grout?
Follow these simple ten steps to use Flowpoint slurry grout to fill paving joints:- Firstly clean the paving slabs and joints so they are free from debris and any excess water
- Pre-soak the paving joints & surfaces with water to ensure they are damp – a light spray of water should be perfect
- Pour the Flowpoint powder into a bucket and add 4.25 litres of water
- Mix with a force action mixer for 3–5 minutes, until the consistency is smooth and free of clumps
- Before pouring the slurry mix, ensure that the area is still damp, apply the mixture immediately by carefully forcing Flowpoint into the joints using a rubber squeegee. Flowpoint can set within as little as 15 minutes (at temperatures of 20oC) so you will need to be quick, but careful
- Move the Flowpoint slurry across the patio surface to top-up joints where the mortar has sunk
- Use the rubber squeegee to remove as much of the paving grout from the surface of the slabs – still keep the surfaces constantly damp to prevent the grout from hardening
- Use a brush and plenty of water (or alternatively a sponge machine) to remove any grout that has hardened on the paving surfaces
- Once the mortar is dry (after about 30 minutes - depending on temperature), clean the surface of paving slabs thoroughly to remove any spots of mortar and prevent staining, you'll be looking for clean water running of the patio
- The pavers are ready to walk on after one hour and can receive car traffic after four hours

Does Flowpoint Paving Grout Cause Staining?
Flowpoint Paving Grout does not cause staining or efflorescence—as long as it’s installed correctly and the manufacturer’s guidelines are followed.
However, staining can occur if key steps are skipped during installation. Most issues are caused by:
- Not using a paving primer (like Ultrascape Pro-Prime)
- Failing to mist the paving slabs with water during installation
- Over-watering the grout mix, or allowing water to pool on slabs or in joints
These mistakes can lead to grout haze, patchy discolouration, or dried grout residue on the surface—difficult to remove once cured.
How to Prevent Flowpoint Grout Stains
Follow these simple tips to keep your patio grout looking clean and professional:
-
Use a quality paving primer
Apply a cement-based primer such as Ultrascape Pro-Prime to bond slabs to the mortar bed and prevent stains from seeping through. -
Mist the slabs during application
Lightly spray the paving with water using a rose nozzle or kitchen sprayer throughout the process. This helps control drying and prevents staining. -
Avoid excess water
Do not over-wet the grout mix or allow water to sit on the slabs or joints. Excess water causes surface staining, cracking, and uneven finishes. -
Use a neoprene squeegee
Push the grout firmly into the joints and remove as much as possible from the slab surface for a clean, even result.
✅ Conclusion: Flowpoint only stains when misused. By following the correct process, it delivers clean, durable results—no staining, no efflorescence.
