I work alongside a team of incredibly knowledgeable and caring individuals, and between us we've seen a lot of grouting jobs go wrong because this step was skipped. Pre-Grout Sealer is the product we always recommend before any resin, epoxy or cementitious jointing compound — it's inexpensive insurance against an expensive and very visible problem.
If you're about to grout porcelain, natural stone or concrete paving — whether with ProJoint RapidFlow, TITAN, or any other ProJoint compound — Pre-Grout is the product we'd confidently apply first, every single time. Preparation
Ensure the paving surface is sound, clean and free from dirt, dust and oil before application. For best results, apply onto a dry surface — allow at least two days after cleaning for all moisture to fully dissipate. The sealer can be applied to damp surfaces but performance will be slightly reduced. Apply when surface temperature allows for normal drying conditions.
Application Instructions
- Shake or stir the container well before use.
- Apply a complete, even first coat over the whole paving surface, removing any excess. Allow to dry fully before proceeding.
- Apply a second even coat and leave to cure — 30 to 60 minutes in normal conditions (weather dependent). An extra coat may be needed on particularly porous or textured paving.
- Once the sealer has dried, it is ready to accept foot traffic and your chosen jointing compound can be installed.
- For additional temporary protection, a further coat can be applied immediately before grouting begins on highly textured surfaces.
- Clean all tools and equipment with water after use.
Important: Always test in a hidden area before full application. The sealer is designed to be invisible but may very slightly darken extremely light or highly porous surfaces. Do not discharge waste into drains or watercourses.
For a longer-lasting permanent seal once the Pre-Grout Sealer has faded, we recommend ProJoint PRO-820 ECO Invisible Water-Based Sealer.
Frequently Asked Questions
I'm Cleo, owner of The Paving Experts, with over 25 years in the construction industry working with businesses including Tarmac and Instarmac. I work alongside a small team of incredibly knowledgeable and caring individuals who share the same passion for getting it right. The FAQ answers below come from the questions we're asked every single day.
Why should I use Pre-Grout Sealer?
The sealer assists in preventing resin sheen and grout haze. It also helps with the workability of jointing compounds — including air cure, epoxy and cementitious grouts. Skipping this step is one of the most common causes of a disappointing finish after grouting.
How long until the sealer is cured and ready for grouting?
As soon as the sealer has dried — 30 to 60 minutes weather dependent — it is ready to accept foot traffic and your chosen jointing compound.
Is the sealer water or solvent based?
This sealer uses a water-based formula, allowing it to be used all year round without the hazards associated with solvent-based products.
Does the area need to be dry before application?
For best results, apply onto a dry surface. However, the sealer can be used if surfaces are damp — performance will be slightly reduced on very wet surfaces.
How many coats do I need to apply?
We recommend 2 coats for maximum protection. You must wait for the first coat to dry fully before applying the second. On highly textured or porous paving, an additional coat may be applied immediately before grouting.
What is the coverage rate?
1 litre covers up to 15m² on natural stone and up to 30m² on porcelain. A 5 litre container covers up to 75m² on stone and up to 150m² on porcelain.
Will it change the look of my paving?
No — it dries completely invisible with no change to colour or texture. We always recommend testing in a small hidden area first, particularly on very light or highly porous surfaces.
Which jointing products is it compatible with?
All ProJoint products — it is particularly recommended before RapidFlow, TITAN, Flowpoint Natural Grey, Flowpoint Fine Natural Grey, Porcelpoint, Larsen FJM, FUGA-PAVE FLEX XP and TileJam. Also suitable for use before leading cementitious grouts.
Can it be used after grouting too?
Yes — once grouting is complete and fully cured, a coat of Pre-Grout Sealer can be applied to protect the paving surface and aid future removal of stains and dirt from organic matter.

Application Instructions
Paving should be sound, clean and free from dirt, dust and oil. Surfaces can be damp prior to application, but a better seal is achieved on a dry surface. We recommend cleaning with Nexus Paving & Driveway Cleaner prior to application and leaving to dry for at least two days — it is important that all moisture within the paving has fully dissipated before sealing.
The sealer is supplied ready for use. Apply when the surface temperature is between 5°C and 25°C — as a guide, the stone should be cool to the touch. Shake the container well before use. Application may be made by brush, roller or spray (wear appropriate PPE when spraying).
- Apply a complete, even first coat over the whole surface, ensuring any excess is removed. Allow to dry for 30 minutes.
- Apply a second even coat and leave to cure. Dependent on temperature, the second coat should be fully cured in approximately 1 hour. An extra coat may be required on particularly porous paving.
- Once the sealer has fully cured, the paving can be grouted or pointed. For additional temporary grout protection, a final coat can be applied immediately before grouting.
Clean all tools and equipment thoroughly with water after use.
Important: Always test in a hidden area prior to full application and only proceed when satisfied with the results. The Pre-Grout Sealer is designed as an invisible coating but may darken very light surfaces slightly. Do not discharge waste into drains or rivers.
For a longer-lasting seal once the Pre-Grout sealer has faded, we recommend ProJoint PRO-820 ECO Invisible Water-Based Sealer.
