UltraCrete Instant Road Repair 10mm FAQs

I’m Cleo, owner of The Paving Experts, with over 25 years in the construction industry working with businesses including Tarmac and Instarmac. I work alongside a small team of incredibly knowledgeable and caring individuals who share the same passion for getting it right. The FAQ answers below come from the questions we’re asked every single day.

What is the difference between the tub and the bag?

Both contain 25kg of the same IRR 10mm material and once opened, all material should be used. The tub is preferred by contractors who need a stackable, rigid container that’s easy to move around site and between jobs. The bag gives better pallet efficiency (56 vs 52 tubs per pallet) and suits larger single repairs or bulk purchasing.

Can I reseal the tub and use it later?

The tub is resealable, but once opened, all material should be used in one go. IRR begins to cure on contact with air, so plan to complete the repair using the full contents of the tub.

Is Instant Road Repair 10mm a permanent repair?

Yes. When applied correctly — including use of UltraCrete SCJ to seal edges and substrate — IRR 10mm provides a first-time permanent reinstatement. HAPAS approved since 2002 for Type 3 and 4 roads.

What surfaces is IRR 10mm designed for?

Type 3 and 4 roads and vehicle-trafficked surfaces including drives, minor roads and car parks. For footways, footpaths and cycle tracks, IRR 6mm is the correct specification.

How quickly can the area be opened to traffic?

Instantly — once correctly compacted, immediately trafficable for motor vehicles. No curing wait required.

Can I use IRR 10mm in the rain?

IRR 10mm is compaction-cured and can be used in light rain. If heavy or persistent rain is forecast, UltraCrete Tough Patch is the better product — it is water-cured and specifically designed for wet conditions.

What is the difference between 10mm and 6mm?

10mm is for Type 3 and 4 roads (minimum 30mm depth). 6mm is for footways, footpaths, cycle tracks, car parks and driveways (minimum 15mm). If your repair is shallower than 30mm, 6mm is the correct specification.

When should I use Tough Patch instead of IRR 10mm?

UltraCrete Tough Patch is designed for areas requiring maximum skid resistance — turning circles, lorry parks, bus lanes, braking areas — and for use in heavy or persistent rain. Call us on 0330 122 1025 if you’re unsure.

Do I need to use SCJ?

Yes — we strongly recommend using UltraCrete SCJ Seal and Tack Spray on all vertical edges and substrate, and between layers. It creates a waterproof bond and significantly improves repair longevity.

Why is my IRR firm in the tub?

Apply light pressure to the inner bag within the tub to restore normal consistency. In cold weather, store somewhere warm overnight before use.

What is the shelf life?

6 months from date of manufacture in sealed tubs, stored in a cool, well-ventilated place. Once opened, all material should be used.

Is IRR 10mm approved for use on the London Underground?

Yes — approved for use on both the London Underground and Overground.

Is a pallet deal available?

You’re on it — this is our 52-tub full pallet deal with free delivery to England & Wales. For larger quantities or bespoke pricing, call us on 0330 122 1025.

How do I apply Ultracrete Instant Road Repair 10MM?

  1. Saw cut a ‘picture frame’ around the repair or reinstatement area.
  2. Ensure the area is clean and free from debris.
  3. Seal the vertical edges and substrate using UltraCrete SCJ Cold-Joint Spray. Reinstatements up to 100mm deep can be completed using a layer-on-layer method.
  4. Apply the product to a depth of approximately 45mm and compact to 30mm to form the first layer.
  5. Re-apply SCJ Edge Sealant to the vertical edges before applying the second layer of Instant Road Repair 10MM.
  6. Repeat step 4.
  7. Re-apply SCJ to the vertical edges.
  8. Apply a final 60mm layer and compact to 40mm to achieve the finished surface course.

Please note: All compaction must be carried out in accordance with Appendix 8 of the SROH 2010. If over-banding is required, apply UltraCrete Instaband ECO.

Potholes form when water enters cracks in tarmac or asphalt, freezes, and weakens the surface, which then breaks under traffic. Instarmac UltraCrete offers fast, durable solutions including Instant Road Repair (IRR 6mm & 10mm), Permanent Pothole Repair (PPR), and Tough Patch for high-traffic areas. SCJ Cold Joint Bitumen Spray prevents water ingress, and Instaband ECO Tape seals repairs. IRR and PPR are bitumen-based and cure after compaction, while Tough Patch is water-activated for rapid curing, providing long-lasting repairs for roads, footpaths, driveways, and carriageways.
