About UltraCrete IRR 6mm

UltraCrete Instant Road Repair 6mm is a permanent cold-lay asphalt concrete manufactured with fully graded, high PSV (65) interlocking aggregate and specially formulated bitumen containing polymers and flexibilisers. It is designed for permanent first-time reinstatements in footways, footpaths, cycle tracks, car parks and driveways. Used with UltraCrete SCJ Seal & Tack Spray, it forms a specification-compliant permanent repair that is instantly trafficable once compacted.

Is Instant Road Repair 6mm a permanent repair?

Yes. When applied in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions — including the use of UltraCrete SCJ to seal edges and substrate — Instant Road Repair 6mm provides a first-time permanent reinstatement. HAPAS approved since 2002 as a permanent cold-lay surfacing material.

Can I use IRR 6mm on a car park or driveway?

Yes — IRR 6mm is suitable for car parks and driveways as well as footways, footpaths and cycle tracks. For high-stress areas subject to braking or turning loads, UltraCrete Tough Patch offers greater skid resistance and is the better specification.

How quickly can the repaired area be opened to traffic?

Instantly — once compacted, the area is immediately trafficable. No curing wait required.

Can I use Instant Road Repair 6mm in the rain?

IRR 6mm is compaction-cured and can be used in light rain. If heavy or persistent rain is forecast, UltraCrete Tough Patch is the better product — it is water-cured rather than compaction-cured, and is specifically designed for wet conditions.

What is the difference between the 6mm and 10mm grade?

The 6mm grade is for footways, footpaths, cycle tracks, car parks and driveways (min depth 15mm). The 10mm grade is for Type 3 and 4 roads carrying motor vehicle traffic (min depth 30mm). If your repair is shallower than 30mm, 6mm is the correct specification.

When should I use Tough Patch instead of IRR 6mm?

UltraCrete Tough Patch is recommended for areas requiring maximum skid resistance, for heavy or persistent rain (it is water-cured), and for surfaces subject to repeated braking or turning loads. Call us on 0330 122 1025 if you're unsure.

Should I choose bags or tubs?

Both contain 25kg of the same material. Bags are better for larger repairs or bulk purchasing — foil bags keep the product fresh and you get better pallet efficiency (56 bags vs 52 tubs). Tubs are better if you're a contractor moving between jobs and need a rigid, stackable container that's easy to carry to the point of repair. Note: once a bag or tub is opened, all the material should be used in one go — we don't recommend resealing and storing a partially used tub as air contact will start to cure the material.

Do I need to use SCJ?

Yes — we strongly recommend using UltraCrete SCJ Seal and Tack Spray on all vertical edges and substrate, and between layers. It creates a waterproof bond and significantly improves repair longevity.

Why is my IRR firm in the bag?

Bags at the bottom of a pallet can appear firm due to the weight of material above. Apply light pressure to the edge of the bag to restore normal consistency. In cold weather, store somewhere warm overnight before use.

What is the shelf life?

6 months from date of manufacture in sealed bags, stored in a cool, well-ventilated place off the ground. Once opened, all material should be used.

Is Instant Road Repair 6mm approved for use on the London Underground?

Yes — approved for use on both the London Underground and Overground.
