What is a flowable paving grout?

A flowable paving grout is one that is mixed to a slurry consistency and poured directly onto the paving surface, where it flows down into and fills the joints under gravity — assisted by a squeegee. This is fundamentally different from traditional hand-pointing, where mortar is packed into joints by hand with a trowel. Flowpoint is one of the most established flowable paving grouts available in the UK, having been in use for over 30 years on projects ranging from domestic patios to major public realm schemes. The flowable method is faster, more consistent, and far less labour-intensive than traditional pointing.

Is Flowpoint a good paving grout for driveways?

Yes — Flowpoint Standard is an excellent paving grout for driveways. It's open to vehicular traffic in just 4 hours, which makes it one of the most practical rapid-setting paving grouts for driveway use. Its compressive strength of 49.6N/mm² and BS 7533 classification mean it's well-specified for vehicle loading. It's been used on high-traffic public realm schemes including Birmingham Bullring and Liverpool Lime Street Station — so domestic driveway loads are well within its capability. Joints must be at least 5mm wide and 20mm deep, and the paving must be laid on an appropriate non-permeable bed.

What joint width is required for Flowpoint?

Flowpoint Standard requires a minimum joint width of 5mm and a minimum joint depth of 20mm. It can be used in joints up to 50mm wide and 200mm deep in a single application. If your joints are narrower than 5mm — for example on smooth porcelain or close-cut natural stone — consider Flowpoint Fine (suitable from 2mm) or Flowpoint Smooth (from 3mm). How do you apply Flowpoint paving grout?

Flowpoint is applied as a poured slurry — it's faster and far simpler than traditional hand-pointing. The basic process is: pre-soak or pre-seal the paving, mix one bag of Flowpoint with 4.25 litres of clean water for 3–5 minutes using a paddle mixer, pour the slurry onto the paving, and spread it across the surface using a neoprene squeegee to force it into the joints. Once the grout begins to firm up (typically 10–30 minutes depending on temperature), use the thumb test to confirm it's ready, then clean off the surface thoroughly with a brush and plenty of clean water. You must keep the surface misted throughout if not using a temporary pre-sealer. Can I use Flowpoint with darker limestone such as black limestone?

Flowpoint can cause oxidisation on some darker limestones such as black limestone — however, the new generation of temporary pre-sealers, such as Tile Rite Patio Prep Temporary Sealer, prevent this by creating a protective barrier between the stone and the grout. Applied before grouting, Patio Prep is a game-changer for darker stones and means Flowpoint can be used confidently across a much wider range of paving. How long does Flowpoint last?

When applied correctly, Flowpoint slurry paving grout can last beyond 30–40 years without the need to re-grout.

How quickly does Flowpoint set?

Flowpoint typically sets in about 15–30 minutes and can be walked on within one hour under normal conditions (20°C). Full curing at 20°C takes 24–48 hours, though it may continue to gain strength over several days. Colder conditions extend curing time; warmer temperatures accelerate it. Vehicular traffic is possible after just 4 hours at 20°C.

Is Flowpoint permeable?

No — Flowpoint is a non-permeable, cementitious-based grout, meaning it doesn't allow water to pass through once set. It must always be applied on a solid, non-permeable bed.

Can Flowpoint be used in the rain?

Yes — you can use Flowpoint in light rain, but ensure the paving joints don't fill up with rainwater. Applying on a damp day can actually be beneficial, as it slows the set and gives you more working time.

Will Flowpoint stain my paving?

Flowpoint is designed to be stain-free and resistant to efflorescence — provided it's applied correctly. Staining is not a product fault; it's typically caused by skipping a paving primer, not misting slabs during application, or over-watering the mix. Use a neoprene squeegee, keep slabs misted, and consider a temporary sealer such as Tile Rite Patio Prep for porous or textured stones.

Do I need to pre-seal my slabs before using Flowpoint?

If using a temporary pre-grout sealer (such as Tile Rite Patio Prep or Nexus ProJoint Pre-Grout): do not pre-soak the paving. The sealer replaces this step by creating a protective barrier that prevents grout residue bonding to the surface.

If not using a temporary sealer: thoroughly wet the paving with a hose spray before applying, then remove all standing or ponded water from the surface and joints — a leaf blower is ideal. The surface should be damp, not waterlogged.

What is the shelf life of Flowpoint?

8 months from the date of manufacture (printed on the bag, on the white strip on the side of the bag), for unopened, sealed bags stored in a cool, dry, frost-free area. Using the product after the declared storage period may increase the risk of an allergic reaction.

Flowpoint Fine and Porcelpoint require 3.4 litres of clean water per 20kg bucket, whereas Flowpoint Standard, Smooth, ECO and Premium require 4.25 litres of water per 25kg bag.
