Mixing and applying Flowpoint Fine Charcoal 25kg
Use 4.25 litres of clean water for one full 25kg bag. The separate 20kg tub takes 3.4 litres, so double-check the pack before mixing. Follow the current instructions on your bag.
- Get set up first. Check that the paving is firmly bedded and joints are clean, 2–50mm wide and at least 20mm deep. Clear loose debris and bedding mortar. Have your mixer, squeegee, water and clean-down tools ready; keep grout and wash water out of drains.
- Prepare the slabs. For the standard method, wet paving and joints thoroughly, then remove standing water. The surface should be damp, not puddled; mist gently as you work. If using a compatible temporary pre-grout treatment instead, follow its instructions, which may require a dry surface. Trial a small area, particularly with porous or dark stone.
- Mix the bag. Measure 4.25 litres of clean water into a clean vessel, gradually add the whole 25kg bag and mix with a suitable paddle or forced-action mixer for approximately 3–5 minutes until smooth and pourable, not watery. Check no dry powder remains. Workability is around 5–15 minutes, depending on temperature, so mix only what you can use promptly. Do not add extra water or remix grout once it starts to set.
- Fill the joints. Pour onto the paving and work into the joints with a neoprene squeegee and pole bundle. Top up joints that settle and remove excess from the slab face as you go.
- Wait for a firm joint before wash-off. Don't judge by grout drying on the paving. Use a light thumb test on the grout in the joint. If it bleeds from the joint, wait. Keep the slab face damp where the standard method requires it, then clean thoroughly within the stated window. Do not leave charcoal residue to harden on the paving.
Weather matters. Heat and sun can shorten working time; cold delays setting. Work in manageable areas, avoid frost and unsuitable weather, and follow the bag's temperature and wash-off guidance rather than changing the water ratio. Initial set is approximately 30 minutes at 20°C; allow approximately one hour for light foot traffic and four hours for vehicles at 20°C where the complete installation is ready.
Wear gloves and eye protection: wet cement can burn skin. Wash tools regularly and keep slurry out of drainage.

Where does Charcoal work with porcelain slabs and other paving?

How to use it when laying porcelain slabs
Prepare clean joints at least 20mm deep. For the standard method, wet paving and joints and remove standing water; if using a compatible temporary pre-grout treatment, follow its directions instead. Add one full 25kg bag to 4.25 litres of clean water, paddle-mix until smooth and work the slurry into the joints with a neoprene squeegee and pole bundle. Wait until the joint is firm before washing off excess, and never leave dark residue to harden on the slabs. Keep wash water and grout out of drains. Getting the wash-off timing right matters whichever colour you choose. Gareth Wilson’s advice is helpful if this is your first Flowpoint Fine job:
Gareth Wilson, hard landscaping expert and RHS award winner: “As with other Flowpoint grades, be patient and hold your nerve so you don't wash the product off too soon. Too many contractors start washing off when the product starts to dry on the slabs. You need to keep the slabs damp with a mist of water so it doesn't go off on them too soon. Always make sure Flowpoint Fine is set in the joint before washing it off. Keep your eye on the firmness of the joint — just with a little thumb test. Once firm, then begin washing off.”
Gareth Wilson: “Some landscapers are stuck in their ways and they don't like change. Their attitude is, 'I've been doing this for 20 years… Why should I change now?' And some are quite rightly scared when they consider pouring Flowpoint onto their slabs — at the end of the day, you are pouring a cementitious slurry directly onto the pavers. It goes against everything that you've been taught. But Flowpoint has been developed so it doesn't stick to the paving.
“In addition to its British Standard rating and the strength of the product, it's also the speed at which you can install it. If you're going to be on your hands and knees with a trowel and a three-to-one mortar mix, it will take you about five times as long to install, compared with using Flowpoint. Flowpoint is just so easy and quick to install that it makes you money. It's a well-priced product and, in my view, a landscaper's friend. Ultimately, it means less time on the job and more profit in your pocket.”

Yes, Flowpoint Fine can be used with black limestone. We recommend a compatible temporary pre-grout sealer to help prevent white marks associated with oxidation. Follow its instructions and try a small area first.
How long will it last?
Durability depends on the full construction, loads and maintenance. We can't promise one lifespan for every patio.
Is it permeable?
Flowable refers to application, not drainage through the cured joint. Check the current bag guidance and the full bedding and drainage design.
Can I work in rain?
Some Flowpoint applications can tolerate light rain, but check this bag's weather and temperature limits. Protect fresh work from heavy rain and frost.
Do I need a temporary pre-grout treatment?

Always make sure Flowpoint Fine is set in the joint before washing it off. Keep your eye on the firmness of the joint — just with a little thumb test. Once firm, then begin washing off.”
Gareth Wilson: “Some landscapers are stuck in their ways and they don't like change. Their attitude is, 'I've been doing this for 20 years… Why should I change now?' And some are quite rightly scared when they consider pouring Flowpoint onto their slabs — at the end of the day, you are pouring a cementitious slurry directly onto the pavers. It goes against everything that you've been taught. But Flowpoint has been developed so it doesn't stick to the paving.

For suitably designed rigid or bound, void-free joints on patios, driveways, paths, pedestrian schemes and carriageways with suitable natural stone, concrete flags, porcelain tiles and clay pavers. Mixing and applying Flowpoint Fine Charcoal 25kg
Use 4.25 litres of clean water for one full 25kg bag. The separate 20kg tub takes 3.4 litres, so double-check the pack before mixing. Follow the current instructions on your bag.
- Get set up first. Check that the paving is firmly bedded and joints are clean, 2–50mm wide and at least 20mm deep. Clear loose debris and bedding mortar. Have your mixer, squeegee, water and clean-down tools ready; keep grout and wash water out of drains.
- Prepare the slabs. For the standard method, wet paving and joints thoroughly, then remove standing water. The surface should be damp, not puddled; mist gently as you work. If using a compatible temporary pre-grout treatment instead, follow its instructions, which may require a dry surface. Trial a small area, particularly with porous or dark stone.
- Mix the bag. Measure 4.25 litres of clean water into a clean vessel, gradually add the whole 25kg bag and mix with a suitable paddle or forced-action mixer for approximately 3–5 minutes until smooth and pourable, not watery. Check no dry powder remains. Workability is around 5–15 minutes, depending on temperature, so mix only what you can use promptly. Do not add extra water or remix grout once it starts to set.
- Fill the joints. Pour onto the paving and work into the joints with a neoprene squeegee and pole bundle. Top up joints that settle and remove excess from the slab face as you go.
- Wait for a firm joint before wash-off. Don't judge by grout drying on the paving. Use a light thumb test on the grout in the joint. If it bleeds from the joint, wait. Keep the slab face damp where the standard method requires it, then clean thoroughly within the stated window. Do not leave charcoal residue to harden on the paving.
Weather matters. Heat and sun can shorten working time; cold delays setting. Work in manageable areas, avoid frost and unsuitable weather, and follow the bag's temperature and wash-off guidance rather than changing the water ratio. Initial set is approximately 30 minutes at 20°C; allow approximately one hour for light foot traffic and four hours for vehicles at 20°C where the complete installation is ready.
Wear gloves and eye protection: wet cement can burn skin. Wash tools regularly and keep slurry out of drainage.

For suitably designed rigid or bound, void-free joints on patios, driveways, paths, pedestrian schemes and carriageways with suitable natural stone, concrete flags, porcelain tiles and clay pavers. Our delivery charges are calculated based on the size and weight of your order. When you add items to your basket, the delivery charges are displayed. Small orders are distributed via courier; larger orders via Pallet Network. Collection is available from our Tamworth depot by request (contact us first to arrange on 0330 122 1025).

Mixing and applying Flowpoint Fine Charcoal 25kg
Use 4.25 litres of clean water for one full 25kg bag. The separate 20kg tub takes 3.4 litres, so double-check the pack before mixing. Follow the current instructions on your bag.
- Get set up first. Check that the paving is firmly bedded and joints are clean, 2–50mm wide and at least 20mm deep. Clear loose debris and bedding mortar. Have your mixer, squeegee, water and clean-down tools ready; keep grout and wash water out of drains.
- Prepare the slabs. For the standard method, wet paving and joints thoroughly, then remove standing water. The surface should be damp, not puddled; mist gently as you work. If using a compatible temporary pre-grout treatment instead, follow its instructions, which may require a dry surface. Trial a small area, particularly with porous or dark stone.
- Mix the bag. Measure 4.25 litres of clean water into a clean vessel, gradually add the whole 25kg bag and mix with a suitable paddle or forced-action mixer for approximately 3–5 minutes until smooth and pourable, not watery. Check no dry powder remains. Workability is around 5–15 minutes, depending on temperature, so mix only what you can use promptly. Do not add extra water or remix grout once it starts to set.
- Fill the joints. Pour onto the paving and work into the joints with a neoprene squeegee and pole bundle. Top up joints that settle and remove excess from the slab face as you go.
- Wait for a firm joint before wash-off. Don't judge by grout drying on the paving. Use a light thumb test on the grout in the joint. If it bleeds from the joint, wait. Keep the slab face damp where the standard method requires it, then clean thoroughly within the stated window. Do not leave charcoal residue to harden on the paving.
Weather matters. Heat and sun can shorten working time; cold delays setting. Work in manageable areas, avoid frost and unsuitable weather, and follow the bag's temperature and wash-off guidance rather than changing the water ratio. Initial set is approximately 30 minutes at 20°C; allow approximately one hour for light foot traffic and four hours for vehicles at 20°C where the complete installation is ready.
Wear gloves and eye protection: wet cement can burn skin. Wash tools regularly and keep slurry out of drainage.
